Interesting. I never thought about this, but I do approach each thread differently depending on how interested I am in the topic. I would say I read new (shorter) threads in their entirety. If it's a long thread (over 50 responses) but I am interested in the topic, I will usually read at least all of the first and some of the second pages of responses because they are usually responding directly to the OP.
When it starts to veer off, I stop reading, as I rarely get involved in "conversations" that don't relate to the OP. I will then post or not, depending on whether I think I have something to contribute. Sometimes I will just post a short thought, other times I will post a full opinion.
And there are times I will speed read even a long thread if it's a topic I am invested in.
Hmm . . . yes, an interesting and thought provoking question. I guess I will be taking note of this from now on.

I learned quickly that I SHOULD read the whole thread or risk being attacked for something I missed...

It depends on the length of the thread and my interest in the topic. Sometimes I skip posts due to their length or past experiences with the author of the post..

I do "try" and read a whole thread.
As for all the quoting within a post. Sometimes it's necessary. The meaning, translation, comprehension of a post gets lost when quotes are cut at times. Posters get jumped on because now the context looks like it changed; an innocent comment now looks devious. And that's all it takes for a number of posters to jump the bash-wagon.

It depends on how many replies there are. If there are over 20 I usually just respond to the OP. I hate scrolling through all the quotes.

Depends on how many responses.....I try to read as many as I can (when I have time) before I respond...sometimes I just reply to the OP.

If I am going to reply, I read the entire thread. If I don't plan to reply, then I will read the replies until A) I'm ready to move on to another thread; B) I find the thread interesting so will read them all.
Like this thread. ![]()

I often only have time for the OP. Other times, I read the first page and forget to check that there are additional posts. Very long threads, I seldom read all posts. Time issues.
