Do you put flatware back in the box?

Do you put unused flatware back in the box after it has been on the table through dinner? I had always put it all into the dishwasher. However several guests told me they had saved me washing up by not using all the forks or spoons in their place settings. In my opinion if flatware has been on the table for over an hour I consider it dirty. All my guests and I have dishwashers.
