I like the self checkouts when I have just a few things, which isn't happening these days. A trip to the store is for bulk buying or not even bothering to go.

What I refuse to do is use them for big orders. Most of our stores used to have full size belts and registers in the self checkout for people who had large orders. They recently removed them all, and put in the little ones that you can only fill about three bags and then moving anything to continue with your order makes the 'thing' think you stole something and locks the screen down, while you wait for an associate to come unlock it.

I did one large order like that some time back, had to get the screen unlocked like a half a dozen times, and vowed to never do it again.

Open up a full service, full size registers for large orders, or I'm walking out. Not messing with it.

If I go in WM, I always use the self check-out. They upgraded the software last year and now it actually works. The store has 30 cashier lanes, but only keep two lanes open with humans. I don't have time for that. I usually only have a few things at WM so am in and out quickly. If I go into Kroger, I have to have someone check out my stuff which means standing in line awhile. Their self check-out is slow and doesn't work well. Downside of having someone else check out your purchases....they won't fill your reusable bags, so you have to bag everything yourself. I just let them use plastic, then when I get to the car, I put the things in my reusables since they are easier to carry when I get home. Loved doing pickup, but now go inside.
