@Desertdi wrote:Yes.....nobody else can see what I'm buying
@Desertdi I did not know people worry about what other people are thinking about what is in a cart? Who has time for that when shopping. I think you are over worrying.... what in the heck are you buying that someone would be judging you for having in your cart? I mean, TP paper is really rather embarressing, but I see people with it in their carts all the time.... no one is judging you for what is in your cart.

Generally no....If I have a couple of items, I will use it.
Last week, there was one cashier open, many people in line....one entire section of self check closed.
It took all I had to not just walk out and leave my cart, but I did not do it.
I had to check myself out and I had a LOT of groceries...I was not happy at all.

@SeaMaiden You'd be surprised at some of the "comments".....

I don't like to especially if I have a large order. I always feel I'll mess something up,I'll use it if I'm in a hurry and only have five or less items.

I like them and I use them when I have a small amount of items. It's great if you have a couple of big items since you just use the scanner gun and don't have to lift them. If I have a cart load I go through the standard checkout line. They don't really take away jobs because you always have at least 1-2 register clerk monitor/helpers for them. And since they now have mandatory staggering of the registers that are open (most places never did have all their registers open anyway) it actually GIVES a job to a register clerk that might not have had one. It keeps people moving in and out a lot faster. I have no problem with them it's not that difficult to check your groceries out. Coupons are easier to use since you can either scan them or feed them in (since I've had checkers that said they entered my coupons and never did) and I can bag my stuff the way I like it instead of how they usually just randomly throw stuff in bags and toss them in your cart. To me they work wonderfully. especially if I need to get in and out real quick.

When self-checkout first started, I assumed it would be for just a few items, as a way to support express checkout. Then it escalated, as fewer, and fewer cashiers were available.
What a clever manipulation to have us doing all the work, while laying off cashiers. Love the way you're rarely asked if you need help out to your car anymore, too, even if you clearly have heavy items like cases of water, etc. Of course at self-checkout, they will never ask. You're on your own.
My last visit to Walmart (last year) I had a full cart of groceries, produce and household items. I got in a long line with one of two cashiers, only to be told I needed to go to self checkout. Really! Then the grouch said: 'Oh, I see you have produce, you can check out here.' Good thing, or I would have walked out.
Like everything else, it's becoming abused. They need to have an item limit for self-checkout, just as they do for express lines. It's laborious if you have lots of items. I'll do it if they take a good percentage off my total bill.

At the grocery store I only use it if I have just a few items. At the regular lane I always bag my own groceries so they get bagged the way I want them anyway. At Walmart I use it all the time because they have so many that there is never any waiting.
Now I'm talking about my previous life since I haven't been to any store besides Quick Check since March.

I love using self-checkouts because I do not like to stand in line waiting for someone to check me out. It seems like I always picked the slow line. Now there are usually self-checkouts available to use without having to wait.
I used to worry about jobs lost, but I think they are having a very hard time finding reliable people to fill those jobs, so I don't worry about that anymore. I would like it if they gave me a discount for checking myself out, but that will never happen. Ha!
My biggest concern is theft. Even with security cameras and staff monitoring the devices, I wonder how many people slip a few things by without paying. I'm sure they have done studies about that issue and just out of curiosity I'd be interested in knowing what their loss figures are.

Like others here, unless store is paying me a salary and giving me an employee discount, I always go through the cashier's line.

After I was overcharged $12.00 at a grocery store a few years ago I started using them so I can check each price as it rings up. If it's wrong I can call over the cashier on duty to fix it. I like the checkouts where you can run your item over the scanner and put things right into a bag. I hate the ones where you have to scan, put each item on the belt, and then bag your items after paying. It seems like twice the work but I still do it becuse I know I'm paying the correct price. I also like being able to make sure cans are on the bottom and eggs or tomatoes are on top rather than the other way around.
Sometimes I'm tempted by items not on my list if it's a really good deal but not that often. I usually only get what I went in for so not that much in extra money is spent.
