Yes... it is like when the Bill Gates foundation donates multi millions to starving children in poor countries.... and nothing like that gets donated here.

Actually, it does get donated around here. I'm constantly reading about schools in need of help with technology. Not because they don't have it, but because someone or someones break-in and steal it. Donations always pour in right away.

A couple of people complained about students getting iPads for various classes in some schools, but it was pointed out that they replace quite a few textbooks and a lot of additional learning materials.

I don't know of any school where I live that doesn't have a well stocked computer lab, and of course they're in all the public libraries.

There are also groups of technology people who take in used computers, rehab them, and make them available to students who don't have one at home.

I don't know of anyone we know who doesn't have a computer, that includes older people in their 70s.

I know several people, both friends and family, who do not own a computer. I used one at work for many years and thus got my home computer almost 30 years ago.

Thanks, just teasing you. He had quite a year and many in the medical profession didn't think he would make it to this birthday so it seems like the celebrations have been going on for weeks - well, yes, they have!

I will share your kind words with him. (He is doing great now, better than he has felt in years and years).

I think we are on the verge of something that happened with TV. When my son was little and in school, there were many families that didn't , by choice, have TV. It was not money or availability of cable service, they just didn't want their kids to sit in front of the television. It was quite a fad in the late 90's and early 2000's around our area. Many in academia and some quite financially well off.

I think that time is coming with computers and technology in general. I think in the next decade or so, you will see a wave of families unplugging at home and not having this kind of stuff while the kiddos are little. I think we will see them embracing books, games and outside play. By no means will everyone do it, it will be a small fad, kind of the way vegetarianism and organic foods started, just small and only "kooks" did it. Given time, it might be as mainstream as vegetarianism and organics are now.

Thanks for the replies. It seems there are plenty who do not have a computer. I predict one day soon everyone will.

My dad who passed away 3 plus years ago, never had a computer or an ATM card or a credit card (believe it or not). He DID however have a cellphone.
