On Rock Center they just did a story on a town in Wisconsin called La Crosse where 96% of the patients at their hospital have an advanced directive. The story included an interview with a couple where the husband had terminal lung cancer. He and his wife sat with a nurse while she went thru the questionnaire about end of life decisions. It made a lot of sense and made me think it's something I should do and also whether I really know what my parents want. Aside from the emotional relief, it also caused the hospital to spend half of the typical cost for end of life patients compared to the national average. Rather than be brought back and have aggressive treatments, most patients just wanted to be kept comfortable and as painfree as possible.
