Re: Do You Think We Have This Upside Down?

like some sports, don't know many players anymore, love music, don't know who's behind all of it now.  I have no input into someone else's money they make, so it isn't something I think about.

I've heard how much athletes make and that does blow me away.  But if their bodies get ruined due to sports, they'll need the money for doctors down the road.

I was a college instructor, not a professor, but I knew the pay structure and it was surprising how little the professors were paid. They got annual raises, but some didn't make a lot more than I did when I was teaching in public school.

I have a close friend who was an assistant director for a PA program who ended up quitting because of the university's refusal to give her a raise in over 5years. They begged her to come back with the title of director but no extra money to go along with it. Needless to say she refused. It comes down to a general lack of respect for what people actually do.

@Tinkrbl44  The supply & demand is self-evident.

But, what does it say about our values? Why do we have such a demand for celebrities? Are we upside down on this?

Not all professional athletes have “injuries “. If they do I don’t think it would cost the millions that they make. I’m also pretty sure they have medical insurance. Think about people who have jobs that result in injuries and don’t have the insurance or the means to pay for it.

We spend our money on the food, clothing, activities, and entertainment that bring us pleasure. Some get pleasure from self sacrifice, giving to charity. We live in a free country where how we spend our money is our choice.

There is nothing wrong with our values.

Check out this salary for Aaron Judge, an outfielder for the NY Yankees because he can throw, catch, and hit a ball very, very well.

He makes money for the Yankee franchise and so they pay.

Current Contract
Aaron Judge signed a 9 year / $360,000,000 contract with the New York Yankees, including $360,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $40,000,000. In 2023, Judge will earn a base salary of $40,000,000, while carrying a total salary of $40,000,000.

Fans are willing to pay the high ticket prices to see the games along with high priced Yankee merchandise.

Is he worth that much?  The Yankees think so.

Yes, I think that Mr. Judge is worth it.

The Yankee franchise is worth just north of $7 billion.

The Yankees organization reports gross revenue of about $660 million, $140 million in cable rights alone.

With player payroll of about $162 million,  he is well worth the portion paid to him.  Possibly more.

Here's hoping my grandson can replace Aaron one day in the outfield.  Smiley Happy

I like the Yankees but if I went to a game this season, I would probably want my money back.

We're always in the market for a good outfielder!
