I used to and actually prefer salted watermelon. But I don't use salt on anything anymore for health reasons.

I remember my father salting the melons when I was a young girl and I questioned him about it because I thought it was strange. He told me it brings out the flavor so I guess people were doing this for a long time.

Never heard of it.

My paternal grandparents used to sprinkle sugar on sliced tomatoes, though. (The ones from their garden.)

Many bodily functions could not be performed without sodium in the bloodstream.. While I get your point about excess table salt, sodium is a very important electrolyte for human beings..without it, you will die. So nature, actually predisposes us to crave it...
