@Lucky Charm Her post was added back to the original "Congrats to Amy" thread. Mistakenly removed with inappropiate comments.

Hi Sunny,
I remember it well. we however never avoided the things you mention. 2 of my friends had polio, 1 was effected in his left arm and leg and did limp. the other was in an iron lung and i remember some of us kids going to visit him.
i went to a Catholic school and they didn't give the shots. i remember my mom saying she had to save money to get all 4 of us shots. i remember waiting many hours in a boring doctors office to get our shots. don't remember them hurting enough to remember any pain.
Take care,
hockey(john)

My DH did have what was considered a mild case of polio when he was young. I got shots and then got the vaccine under my tongue.
Polio is now being studied as a treatment for glioblastoma brain tumors because there has been luck with a significant number of cases going into complete remission. See 60 Minutes for the story/stories.
Isn't it amazing that a deadly virus may provide mankind with a possible treatment for tumors?

I had a colleague whose mother had Polio as a child. I was to the mother's home once. Her husband had rebuilt everything to accommodate her wheelchair status, especially the kitchen. He did a really amazing job.
I've read that Polio has been showing up in another country, I don't remember which one, but it's a cause for concern there.

STORY HERE FROM THE NY TIMES last year at this time:
Polio’s Return After Near Eradication Prompts a Global Health Warning
"Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon have recently allowed the virus to spread — to Afghanistan, Iraq and Equatorial Guinea, respectively — and should take extraordinary measures to stop it, the health organization said."

I remember getting the shot for polio. My folks were on top of that one. It's a horror and a shme that people don't or won't vaccinate their children for that disease. I've seen what polio does to perfectly healthy individuals who contract it - it's ugly. Ignorance at work again as well as poverty in foreign countries. It can be erradicated.

I remember it well although none of my friends or family were affected. We got the shots at our doctor's office. My brother who was older than me got his first and then he sat in a chair waiting for me. He fainted and fell onto the floor and we gave him grief for years about that.
When the sugar cubes vaccine came out, we also got those. I remember lining up at the local high school auditorium to get them.

Did anyone see the 60 minutes report on using polio to fight brain cancer?

I remember pictures of kids in iron lungs. I remember my Girl Scout troop taking special things to a place where kids with polio, and other afflictions lived and seeing a child in an iron lung there. It was frightening. I remember seeing a few people crippled by polio. I remember being told not to run through ice cold sprinklers because I might get polio. I remember gettiing the bright pink shot, and I remember drinking the oral vaccine. I think the shots and oral vaccine were given en mass at public health. I don't remember that my parents paid for them. It was part of a national health program. I remember learning it was mostly eradicated. Then suddenly nobody was talking about it. And then on the news the other day, polio was discussed once again, this time as a way to combat cancer.
