I was just using the dictionary to make sure my spelling was correct and it brought
to mind the rejoinder I received from both parents when I asked "how do you spell.........."

yes, i remember.....
now though it is right at my fingertips online via my laptop, tablet, or phone!
much easier, of course.

Yes, I remember but mostly for meanings rather than spelling. I started reading pre-kindergarten and my trusty dictionary was my first exposure to "rabbit holes". I still can't manage to stay away from them lol.

When I was in school, I had a soft covered book with words lists like a dictionary, with no definitions.
The words were listed in alphabetical order was made to check your spelling.
When I was in school, if words were misspelled, the paper was returned to me for correction and I had to write the word correctly 100 times. Oh, how I hated that.
My husband borrowed the book when he joined the police force so he could spell words correctly for his reports. ( he is really a bad speller)
I wonder what happened to it.

Don't really get the jest of this thread, but. Since I see "spelling" mentioned and dictionary! I will go with this.
Had a boss that used to use words he knew most of us P ons didn't have a clue what it meant. So I did him 1 better. I bought a pocket size dictionary and carried in my bibs at work.
When he popped a new word? I said " hold on Page", and I proceeded to look up the definition. Then I would say, "ok Page, you were saying". Again I 1 upped him. Every day I would learn a word I could insert into our conversation that I knew he had no idea what it meant.
Accomplished 2 things. He quit throwing new words at me, and I improved my vocabulary immensely. And I was always pretty good at spelling.
Not sure my rambling fit the purpose of this thread, but with a title like "Do you remember...Go Look It Up....?

You are my sister right?![]()
My mother had a huge dictionary and pocket ones like most people had chairs to sit in. And she gave ones to us for gifts!
But it really did teach us to spell and to have a great vocabulary.
Thanks Mom!![]()

I sure Do remember. Go look it up is pronounced "Google" these days.
I Have hard bound dictionaries. I love the feel of the paper and the act of turning the page.
I am also one of those who read the Dictionary for fun.
I like to check out used book stores for OLD dictionaries.
Language changes new words are added whilst other words fall out of use. Those Old dictionaries have a few gems that are no longer used. ( except by me apparently ).
Now I think I need to get an Updated one!

My parents never said that to me, but I did it on my own. It's my nature to want to learn when I hear something I don't know and I always looked things up, read dictionaries and encyclopedias (another thing you don't see).
It took a lot more effort to "look something up" back in the old days. You had to make an effort to do that.
