Ok, I totally admit I cheated and Google searched it and all I can say is I have never been more glad that I am old and don't have to worry about school anymore . . . yikes!

I believe it means to tap out the sounds in the word to figure out how to spell it.  For example, with "tub" you would tap three times for each of the sounds that make up the word (t-u-b).

The answer does not have to be "the first letter."   As a Primary substitute, I could not believe what the "K" classes were being taught; hence this confusing worksheet.    Due to the lack of continuity in learning first letter "T," the teacher should find another handout.

You have to know how to tap out words, syllables, vowels  and such.  To me it's kind of a confusing way to learn.  But who am I?

I have no clue why you would want to confuse kindergarten kids!! You're  supposed to engage them & get them interested in learning. This is not the way to do it!!
