Courts have ruled that it's not, but the debate goes on. Apparently, some people want regulation and safety guidelines that declaring it a "sport" would bring. I'll say this: It's certainly changed since my high school days.
When I see some of the "cheerleading" today, they're performing stunts with spotters and are too out of breath to even lead the cheers. I don't consider it a sport. There's no competition per se and, if there were, then why call it cheerleading? Why not call it "gymnastics" and compete? Maybe that's the question.
IMO, the "sport" is what's going on behind them.
