Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

Coincidenltly, I made the call to my cable company on Friday - told them I could no longer afford or justify such high rates for television - I downgraded to basic (few channels but greatly reduced fee) and managed to survive the weekend - as long as I get the PBS stations, I am happy.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

I have FIOS Verizon.  Their customer service is very good.  If I cut the TV and depend on an antenna  wouldn't like it. I like to watch movies.  Like my HBO too much.  We don't do Netflix or any of the others.  We have high speed Internet and ditial phone. So it's not just TV.  I would hate to lose that too.  Every 2 years we negotiate and and somehow our bill has not increased.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

Hi Sue @Sue98

I had cable with no premium channels a few years ago.  My husband had done wiring between the upstairs and the downstairs that allowed cable on the TVs of both floors.  Here's how I did it.  I disconnected cable on the downstairs TV in the family room and attached a regular antenna.

Cable was still on the TV in the office upstairs.

For a month I kept track of how often I felt the need to go upstairs and watch cable TV.  At that time QVC and HSN was on cable TV and I couldn't pull it in with an antenna.

I found that I watched more antenna TV in the family room, even though the office was a comfy place to watch cable TV too.

At the end of the month I cancelled cable.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

I haven’t had cable or satellite for several years. We recently signed up for spectrum internet and for $20 a month I can watch tv live and on demand through the pc or mobile devices.

@gidgetgh  ITA!  hubby  and I watch ALOT of TV....both retired now.....so $149 a year is fine.  We do not eat out, we do not go to movies...do not buy expensive Starbucks coffee.....

I would never cancel my cable or my internet  either at this point in our lives.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

I cut the cord for about 2 years. It was kinda hard in the beginning. I only really missed it  on weekends, or when I was home all day. I started gong to the library for movies about 10 at a time!! Got me throught the evenings and weekends. I'm not much of a movie goer, so everything was new to me. I got basic cable again as a gift, and recently added Wifi. My bill is about $70 verses almost $200 for years. And the channels I have now are basically the ones I watched the most anyway out of those hundreds of channels. What a rip!Smiley Indifferent

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

I have Comcast basic cable and I watch very little TV.  I always have my nose in a book.  I do have Netflix but mostly to get independent and foreign films because if it is main stream movie I go see it in a theater.  The library also checks out DVD so I sometimes do that.  I would miss SNL and the late night guys but I think that is about it.

It is an adjustment. It felt like a divorce. I only stayed, because it was easier. I kept internet and got Apple TV. There are many apps there including all of the shopping channels for free. Then you can decide what to stream. I am using direct now. I’m saving about $100 a month.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

cut cable about 6 months ago. i was paying 158 for the bundle package with zero premium channels. i got the roku added hulu and netflix, and havent looked back. they still charge me 65 a month just for internet.

it will be better next month when i move to a new location and i can be a "new" customer again. Had i been a new customer, i would have been able to get internet for 40 a month.

Re: Discontinuing cable due to rate increases?

About 3 years ago our WIFI/basic cable/phone landline went up to almost $190 monthly - with a company we had been with for 30+ years. We decided enough was enough with the hikes, fees and taxes. We dropped the cable and landline phone. Do I miss the History channel, HGTV and the Food Network? Yes, occasionally, but not enough to hand over the ridiculous amount of money my cable provider demands.
