Re: Disappointing Monsoon Season

Here in Southern New Mexico the monsoon moisture is very shallow. Rain clouds form. We have a few drops, and the clouds disappear. We are way too dry for this time of year.

The temperatures are beginning to rise due to lack of our daily mountain showers.  The clouds and rain usually come in around noon and drop temps for the remainder of the day. We have sparse development.

If you live in a monsoon area, are you having typical rainfall amounts?

Your thread took me by surprise since most of the national weather reported on the evening news is either incredible high temps ... or flooding!   I also didn't know the U.S. had any monsoon regions.

Well, I am happy to report that California's ongoing drought was significantly reduced by the January rains.

(I also had water damage on my terrace!  Oh, well.)

Our drought lasted almost ten years!   Since much of Central CA is agricultural, that means more coming from the crops and even reduced prices on some foods we routinely eat.   Supply and demand.

Fingers crossed for those that need water.

Excuse my ignorance but, I had no clue monsoons occurred in the US.  Other than "flood causing heavy thunderstorms" never heard about them on the national or my local news either.  Smiley Surprised

Hi, @Mz iMac. Monsoon season is really impressive. Winds, super heavy  rains, glorious, ominous skies.

I've posted this pic before, taken of a 'microburst' during a monsoon back in 2016, a few years after I moved to Arizona.

Standing in it was thrilling!

I am from originally from the the Midwest and it took me awhile to figure out monsoon season when we re-located to AZ.. I was adept at reading a Midwestern sky, but the Arizona skies were really different as monsoon season came upon us. I always thought a monsoon was a tropical thing, and it is, but the monsoon in the Southwest is even different than that. It's a weather pattern as explained below:

The Arizona Monsoon is a well-defined meteorological event (technically called a meteorological 'singularity') that occurs during the summer throughout the southwest portion of North America. During the winter time, the primary wind flow in Arizona is from the west or Northwest California and Nevada. As we move into the summer, the winds shift to a southerly or southeasterly direction. Moisture streams northward from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This shift produces a radical change in moisture conditions statewide.

We lived in Prescott for a year when I was a kid and I loved the monsoons. Heart

Years later, as an adult, I returned to Arizona for Cubs spring training.  There was an impressive storm and all I remember was Mark Grace running at full speed to get away from it.

Re: Disappointing Monsoon Season

Got 10 drops yesterday and not a single one today.   Arroyos in Albuquerque  were running 12 ft deep for awhile this afternoon, weakening a support under I-25 causing an exit to be closed.  Meanwhile Pres. Biden arrived further closing the interstate.  Big mess out there this evening.
