My sister and I would have inherited it, but my father had to move to an independent living facility in our town a couple of years ago. He didn't want to sell it as he kept thinking he would be able to move back into it. We finally convinced him that it was a lot of upkeep, insurance, etc. and he would never be able to move back.
We cleaned it out, took what we wanted, and had someone come and sell the rest of it for us. It was a huge job as my father saved every piece of paper that he ever had. One day when my sister and her husband were working on his yard because we were getting ready to list the house with a realtor, someone stopped and asked if we were selling it. He wanted to buy it and did. We felt very fortunate that we didn't have to put it on the market. The house is two hours away from us, and traveling back and forth to clean it out wasn't easy.

Yes, I moved my MIL into it to keep it occupied and then sold it a few years later. It is hard to keep up with property in another state than you reside in.

I was supposed to, however, I will not.
DH will inherit his parents home UNLESS they need to sell in order to care for themselves. If we do; great. If we don't and they lived well to the end; even better.

My parents have inherited homes, but luckily my siblings and I haven't because we still have my parents!
I traded homes with my parents. We bought their tiny beach cottage and live there. They bought our custom made home about an hour inland and live there most of the time.
In the summer months, they usually stay at my house (previously their beach house) and we head north.
In the colder winter months, they usually go to a home my father inherited from his father and stepmother in Indian Wells California.
In between they live at our *old* house which is only 7 years old. It's over 4100 sq. feet on four acres.
We built it with our old age in mind, it's two story, but one story living.
It's also a safe haven for our family in the event of a hurricane--we can all head there and *fit*. Can sleep 14 comfortably.
My brother and his wife live on the adjoining four acres. He built both beautiful homes (I helped!).

@proudlyfromNJ wrote:Yes, my parents sold it when they went to assisted living. When they passed away, my two sisters and a brother and myself received the proceeds. The house was in a prime spot on the water. It was a beautiful house from 1910. Perfect condition. Everyone these days wants a McMansion. They leveled the house.
@proudlyfromNJ this just made me really sad.

yes I did inherit my parents house in 1992, I lived there for eight years. Horrific things happened in that house before parents died, but it got worse afterwards. I kid you not, that house has been sold at least a dozen times since 2000, nobody stays very long.

My brother inherited our family home, but my husband and his brother inherited their family home. We both have our own places so they sold it and we were lucky to sell it because of the poor county it was located in.

It's a long story,i will try to shorten it up.....my parents bought the house in 1974.My older sister lived with them as well as her young son,.my Mother was an alcoholic, my Father was a very religious man..there was always fighting going on amongst them to where i rarely visited. My dad had told me that my sister was dabbling in the occult all the time, and that she had wished cancer on he and my mom. They both did get cancer. My sisters Son ran away from home when he was a teen, last i heard he was living in Oregon and his mother is in a mental hospital. My Mother left the house to me,my DH and our Son lived there for eight years...it never felt right, I often heard and saw things that I couldn't explain. it was seriously something out of a horror movie. Like I said, many families have come and gone....

Oh my gosh, @fourpaws56, all that is just awful! I'm glad you and your family got the heck out of there; that sounds scary to live through!
