I can remember an employee on vacation calling in to their boss and asking for extra days. She got them.

@Susan345,

Gosh that must have been the same company I worked for once! The only excuse was to call in dead!

Funny but not really. One year when a really bad flu or something hit the area, an elderly man who had been there for years and had never taken a sick day, was out for a week with this illness or whatever was hitting so many. The company made him sign that form that had to be signed that he was on record for excessive sick days. That's when I knew I could never continue to work for a company like that.

Another time in a school, the principal actually told us to use all the sick leave days we could before the end of the year because they would just be lost if we didn't take them. So they weren't accumulative. I was amazed at that! I would never have thought anyone would say that or encourage us to do that. He told us he did it himself all the time. Well, after all those years, I guess it was nice of him to tell us that. Still, it just felt kind of dishonest to me. I would have appreciated it more if we were never felt to feel bad or that we weren't really sick when we called in when we were actually sick, as few as those may have been.

I'm sure people abuse sick days, but there are many who don't.

I had some "unusual" calls myself.    One woman demanded to speak with the "General Manager".     I explained that he would be there in the morning.      She said she was his wife and KNEW he was there.    I asked for her name.....and the hubby was a bell boy.......

@on the bay

This company did pay higher wages than any others.  Taking a job with them was like signing your soul over to the devil.

Fortunately we did have a union that was our saving grace.  Eventually they did relax the attendance policy but only because it was a federal requirement.

One day they called a meeting and told us the office was moving to the next state over.  We had the option of going with the job or find a new one.

I chose to go and it was the best decision I ever made.  In the end I put up with their ****** long enough to retire with a good pension.
