Did Anyone Know, For Most Of Human History, Vehicles Had Automatic Collision Avoidance?

"For most of human history, vehicles had automatic collision avoidance and could even take you home when you were sleeping or drunk.  Then we got rid of the horse."

Could you imagine if everyone kept a horse in their garage?

The new cars today do seem to have a lot of safety features.  Automatic braking, parking, warnings and alerts, lane change and back up cameras, etc....But, even all that doesn't protect one from a distracted driver or an angry driver on the road.

wonder what the population of the world was when horses were the predominant transportation ---  and whether self-driving vehicles of today could do the same thing for our far larger number

Horses can also get spooked fairly easily and go out of control. If the horse pulling your carriage gets spooked, you could be in a lot of trouble.

When my family and I first moved to Colorado, years ago, my relatives back east thought that's what we'd be riding in to get to school...no kidding.

My maternal great grandfather was a farmer in New England.  He rode a horse and wagon into town on Fridays (I think it was Fridays) with all his fruits and vegetables.

Sometimes, he would fall asleep on the ride home and his horse would lead him straight to the farm.  When my grandmother and great aunts heard the wagon approach, they'd run out and open the barn doors to let them in.

Unfortunately, my sweet, sweet great aunt was struck by an automobile in the early 1900's.  I believe it was by a drunken serviceman (WWI) and was bady crippled from the accident for the rest of her life. --Which was a long one, and for that I am thankful!

My grandmother grew up in Iowa and they had a pony that pulled a cart to take them to school, went home and came back with the empty cart to pick them up.  I always wished I could go to school that way but no such luck in Pasadena, CA!
