Does it bother anybody that China owns Smithfield and with all the comments about what they’re putting in the meats I just wonder why anyone sells them

Smithfield processes the products they sell in the US in the US.

Yes, I think they do. However, they probably have some additional additives from what I’m reading a lot of things do around the country.

@SunnysMom   Doesn't bother me a bit.  It's just the same as Hormel or any other producer.  Much of the hog operation is contracted to local farmers.

Find something more important to worry about.

Yes and I have read many threads on this board where posters feel exactly the same @SunnysMom .

Personally, I stay away from pork products in general but if having guests that want pork, I would avoid Smithfield products.

@SunnysMom  Meat products processed in the US are inspected by the USDA. There are people overseeing every step of the Smithfield pork processing to make sure they comply with government standards. There is a USDA number on the package which tells you where the product was processed. The USDA also oversees any additives put into the meat. If they are doing their jobs, it should be fine. If you trust our government, don't worry about it.

Re: Delicious foods

[ Edited ]

Meat that goes into cans, particularly chicken, is shipped over there, processed over there and then shipped back over here to get inspected/canned/sold here. Processed meat is cheaper to prepare over there and then have it brought back here to get canned and sold. The chickens are raised here but processed over there and canned over here so it's still a made in USA product technically.

The USDA approved exporting meat to China for processing in 2020...? (don't quote me on that). Meat is raised and slaughtered here before heading to China for processing.

I started purchasing organic meats over a decade ago and in the beginning it was hard to find a good selection.  Mainly just chicken and beef.

But now my main priority is Certified Humane over anything and everything. If I can get cert. humane and organic--great.

Thus, Smithfield (and Hatfields) would never be in my home.  Along with probably 90% of what you would see in the grocery stores.

@Kachina624 ... Come on! She asked a question that she wanted someone to answer. Why the snarky answer? Do as you tell other people... If you're not interested in the question pass it by... Geezz...
