Del Monte Files For Bankruptcy

"On Tuesday evening, Del Monte Foods–yes, the makers of so many popular fruit and veggie products–announced it had voluntarily commenced Chapter 11 proceedings in the New Jersey courts and would be pursuing a sale of the company. "

I was really surprised to read across various news sites that the 139 year old company "Del Monte" has filed for bankruptcy. Besides their fruit and vegetable offerings their brands include College Inn broths, Contadina canned tomatoes, S & W, Kitchen Basics, Joyba, and Take Root Organics.

Some speculation is that consumers now feel that "fresh is best", and that is reflected in consumers buying patterns. Maybe they'll be able to find a buyer...

I was eating a cracker when I saw this on Bluesky and I nearly choked to death.  I was raised on Del Monte and have a cupboard full of Del Monte.

I never purchase canned fruit or vegetables except tomatoes (usually Muir Glen).

I think many are trying to save money buying store brands.

Re: Del Monte Files For Bankruptcy

It seems like Del Monte has been around for such a  long time.  I have enjoyed their canned vegetables over the years and always enjoyed Del Monte products.  It saddens me to see so many stores and businesses closing or not doing well.  I

Sorry to hear that.

In one of the shows, "How Food is Made". They tested canned vegetables and fresh vegetables. And often canned vegetables had more vitamin and nutrients than fresh. Because the canned vegetable was harvested and canned in the same day. And fresh vegetables were picked and shipped to grocery stores and sat in the grocery store for who knows how long.

Hope they can find a buyer.

@bikerbabe  I also don't buy canned foods and for tomato sauces etc, it's Muir Glen Organic. We like to eat fresh organic veggies from Farmer's markets etc. whenever possible. You can't beat the better taste and it's way healthier.

I'm sad to hear this! I love the Del Monte canned vegetables, pineapple rings, peaches, and fruit salad.  I'll miss Del Monte.

Thanks for letting us know @Happy2BHere. I use Del Monte all of the time. I'm not that brand specific; I usually get whichever is the best value. I will admit though I do try to get Contadina tomato products. Smiley Sad
