I think only serious bike riders should use them.  I live in a very dangerous area (lots of traffic) They are putting a bike lane on the street near me.  It's a two lane road on what I think is one of the most dangerous roads in my area.  It's the dumbest thing I ever heard of but there will be idiots who'll use the thing!  There are so many accidents on it it's stupid.

I see people riding on major major highways (they aren't supposed to be).  I don't just think of the people who are hit and/or killed, I think about the person who hit them.  Their life is also changed forever.  Like I said, "If a person isn't a hard core bicycle rider, I think they should stay away from any bike trail that is near any kind of road.

If you see a bike painted white and parked next to the road, it's a ghost bike. It means a biker was hit and killed in that area. I've seen quite a few of them on residentail streets. It kind of mkes me shudder when I see one

@AngusandBuddhasMomI don't know the statistics -  and I do know our own experiences rarely match what mega-data can tell us.  Nevertheless, I have 2 friends who lost husbands to cars driven through intersections -  one through a stop sign and one that came through a red light.  I'm at 2 to nothing and hope it stays that way.

Hi Millie,

I agree that each situation is different that said I can't tell you how many times I have had to veer from oncoming traffic trying to stay out of the way from bikers who think they can dart in front of my car. News flash to bikers, the car will win before I get hit by another car.

The main road that I drive up everyday to get to work just had bike lanes added.  However, they didn't take away driving lanes. They widened the road on each side so it's still a 4 lane highway.

I'm in favor of bike lanes however to be honest, I don't think I have ever seen anyone on this road riding a bicycle.  I've seen people walking in these lanes but we aren't a big biking community.

Bike lanes are fine... ever see a biker texting while biking or cutting off a vehicle at a light?  I've see several bikers that don't obey the rules of the road..

We live in the county.. two lane road with a double line.. you can't move over 3 feet to give them room, talk about a back up with traffic and dangerous for the biker.. Lots of us think they should be insured and have tags on their bikes.

I've never seen a biker texting but I've seen bikers cut off vehicles at lights and other intersections.  I was actually hit at an intersection by a biker.  I had the green light and he was coming across, didn't stop for the light and hit my car.  Luckily he wasn't injured but my car was dented.

DH and I nearly ran into a bicyclist while we were on our motorcycle.  Again, we had the green light, went to continue on through the light and the guy on the bike came screaming across, right in front of us.  DH had to slam the brakes on not hit him.

I like the idea of bike lanes and "sharing the road" and singing Kumbyaya in theory, but not in practice.

The idea that such changes will reduce the number of cars is ridiculous. Very few people bike to work, at least in my neck of the woods. And the one street that I take all the time is so narrow to begin with that if a bicyclist shares with me, I just crawl behind him the whole way.

And I've seen only a handful of bicyclists that take any responsibility in terms of following the laws in place for safety.

Somehow I'm not seeing me bicycling to work in a dress and heels.  LOL

Here in NY we have thousands of miles of bike paths throughout the state.  Several years ago a law was instituted whereby motorists must "share the road" with bicyclists.  My issue with this is many times we the car driver are forced over solid yellow lines on blind curves as there are no shoulders and we have to move to accomodate cyclists.  I have written to all of my local representatives and two different governors stating that if we have to "share" the road with cyclists, then I think they should be paying their share of road taxes too (that's part of what registration fees go towards).  Cyclists should have to take a road test, be licensed and registered if they are going to drive on public roadways.  They, by law, are supposed to follow all traffic laws and sadly many don't.  I almost creamed a guy about 2 years ago.  I was on a major 4 lane road, had a green light and a cyclist blew through his red light in front of me.  I was standing on the brakes not to hit him. This at times has gotten to be one of those hot button issues for me with some of my cyclist friends.  They feel the motorist is responsible for THEIR safety and I say they're responsible for THEIR safety.

Well stated!

I live rural, and while there are few bikers out here, Amish buggies are our problems. They are slow moving, and only recently agreed to putting lights on them at night. We have a lot of hills on state highways with speed limits of 55, and it gives you heart failure when you crest a hill, and there they are in your lane, especially after dark, as their lighting is minimal.

When I do drive in a metropolitan area that has a lot of bikers, I admit I'm a bit on edge when there are no bike lanes, because many bikers don't follow the road rules and make stupid and quick moves. I'd rather there be bike lanes to keep them out of car lanes altogether.

Those Amish buggies terrify me.  Over the summer, my DH's band played at a lot of campgrounds that were out in areas where Amish buggies were prevalent.  Very few of them had lights.  They all had the red triangle on the back that is supposed to glow but they really don't.  The lights the few of them did have were almost like strobe lights that were blinding.

I honestly don't know how there aren't more accidents involving these buggies and cars.  Like you said, I came up over a hill, the speed limit was 55.  I came down the hill and all of a sudden there was a buggy and a car in the other lane coming towards me so I really had to brake because I couldn't move over.  The buggy had no light on it.

@Lipstickdiva, yeppers we passed a guy on a bike texting!  We couldn't believe but he was!!  Worse yet we see people texting on motorcycles!! (Nothing against motorcycles by the way)..  Phone balanced on the tank thing texting!!  What in the sam hedoubleLhockey sticks are people thinking?

Bikers cutting people off at a light, weaving in & out of traffic, sorry there should be stricter rules of the road for bikers..  The dent in your car, did the biker pay for the repair?
