I do not have a debit card. I use a credit card to pay for everything. If I have a problem, my money is not on the line.

I think banks encourage you to use your debit card because it's cheaper for them not having to pay credit card rewards.   The Visa / MasterCard interchange fees may also be less for debit, but I'm not sure of that.

The only place I use a debit card is at the ATM. I use credit cards for most purchases and sometime I pay with cash. I get $ back from 2 of the credit cards I use.

@tansy - and the thought of that possibly happening is why I stopped using mine.

@gidgetgh @tansy    I gave up my debit card years ago.  It was also breached a few times.  I only use a credit card or cash.  I don't use an ATM either.  I write a check for cash at my bank and this works best for me.

@Mombo1 - I write a check at my bank also.  And then I bring the cash home and dole it out to myself and replenish my wallet. It's worked great for years.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@gidgetgh   That is exactly what I do.  I have been with my bank for 30 years.  I write a check for the same amount every 2 weeks....bring it home and use it as needed after replenishing my wallet.  This way I know what I have to spend and it has to last...I find that I don't overspend if I see what I have.

Credit card.  I don't even carry my debit card.  I use it for everything, then have only one bill to pay every month, well, except for rent.

I walk into the credit union, show my ID and ask for whatever denominations I want -- no check.

@gidgetgh   @tansy

Well, here's an interesting tidbit .....

I didn't ever use my debit card very often with retailers, but in 18 months I got TWO calls from Bank of America telling me my debit card had been compromised, it was voided & no need to worry,  and they were sending me a new one asap.  Cards came by Priority Mail.  Huh.

Interestingly, both cards that were mysteriously compromised were both used at only ONE retailer ... Target.  Woman Surprised

Statistically, what are the chances of THAT happening ... accidentally?

This made me chuckle because I'm old school when it comes to getting our "allowance" - usually the same amount each time unless one of use has spent money that needs to be reimbursed.  I write a paper check and have a prepared note of  how I want my cash, the denominations and how many.  Sometimes I'll even tell them I want a crisp bill if I'm getting money for a gift.  Our bank branch is small so we've known the people there for years.  I've received comments on the design of my notepaper.  Now and then I've not sent a note with DH and they ask why he doesn't have one. LOL. I love living in a small town.
