Debit Or Credit Card?

[ Edited ]

So recently Ive been hearing more about debit cards.

Do any of you use a debit card? Is it better than a credit card?

Is there any negatives?

Wondering too...can you use a debit card for any purchases?

@CherryHugs I'm 75 and have used from the day they were available. I only use it at the grocery store or Costco. NEVER used it for car repairs or any other kinds of purchases.

My bank covers any fraud or loss on my DEBIT or CREDIT card. I would never pay for any online purchase with a debit card as if you have a problem with a return I understand it's almost impossible to get your money back or file a despute.

You can use them for everything but, bear in mind, if you don't have a lot of money to cover your purchase it is IMMEDIATELY taken from your checking account...I never write checks anymore, except for the taxes...monthly bills I pay with a debit card.

I don't have a need to use debit card mostly for getting cash from an ATM. I never carry cash anyways so I only use a cc.

I only use a debit card at the ATM.  Otherwise, a credit card and never cash.  A credit card gives some leaway in when the item has to be paid.  A debit card takes the money from the checking account right away.  Unless there's a problem controlling credit card spending, I see no reason to use a debit card to pay for items.

After my debit card was breached several times, I no longer have one.

@CherryHugs

Google your question and see what comes up.

To be safe, I only use a credit card for purchases.  Easy to buy and return items, and if used fraudulently used, the company doesn't make you pay.

I only use my debit card in the bank, at the ATM.  If compromised, it is linked to your checking account and they can drain it before you even know there's a problem.  The bank is NOT obligated to replace what's stolen from your checking account.  It's gone.

So, yes, BIG difference.  HTH

We don't have debit cards, we never did.

I never use a debit card for two reasons.

I don't want a direct link to my bank accounts.

Since I pay off my ccs every month, I get cash back, aka free money. This quarter Discover pays 5% back at gas stations, next quarter it's 5% at grocery stores.
