It's a couch in my house.....

I looked up chesterfields. Our couch wasn't tufted like the ones in the pictures, so I don't know where they got that name from.

I've heard of the word davenport, but never used it.

We say sofa, but my grandmother used to say divan. (pronounced dee-VON)

If I'm not mistaken, Davenport was the name of a sofa manufacturer?????

Anyone?

Yep.

Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a genericized trademark, like aspirin.

You are right, Lotus. It is a Midwestern and NY term, too, according to WIki.

My family of Bostonians called it a divan (dye-van). the living room was the 'pah-lah' (parlor) or simply the front room. Front porch was called a 'piazza'.

I HAVE heart that one. I think one of my grandparents said that, but they pronounced it di-VAN.

I haven't thought of that word in a long time. I just remembered it after reading this thread!

I call it a sofa or couch. It was called davenport in past decades; haven't heard it called that in many years.
