Re: 😲 DOJ has filed suit against Apple! 😮

I'm an all Apple lady. Have a laptop, I Pad , cell phone and 2 watches. Wouldn't want anything else. The cell is also connected to my hearing aid so its hands free. DH had the same things except for the hearing aid thing as he didn't have a hearing problem.

I'm interested in seeing what happens with this.  I have an iPhone, an iPad, Apple Watch Ultra, and MacBook Pro.  I love how they communicate with each other.  I'm also looking at the AirPods Pro 2 that are now relatively cheaper--I guess because the new AirPods are coming out this year.  There are some things I'd rather do on an HP and Chrome instead of Safari, but for the most part, I'd rather use Apple products.

My only issue (and it is a subtle one) is that the ports on my devices seem to be made with a material that collapses when a charging cord with a lightening insert twists and not only becomes unusable but also then ruins the internal connection for charging.

The situation seems "pre-meditated" to me.

I know exactly what you're referring to. I've experienced the same issue.

I also think there's something sketchy about the iPhone batteries--but I can't prove it.  ðŸ˜‚

I have the iPhone 14.  I understand they've done something to change the backlight of the screen to preserve the battery, but I want mine on full all the time.  It's easier for me to read when the screen is brighter.  When my setting is turned up as high as it will go, it adjusts to a darker screen even though I want a brighter one.  I went into settings and turned off the batter saver option, but it didn't help.  My dad uses the iPhone 15 and his doesn't do that.  I noticed they're now talking about an iPhone 16 coming this fall.

One of the reasons I upgraded was for the camera, but I find it's more difficult to focus than the previous model.

@Carmie I think you are mixing apples and oranges.  Electric vehicles, as in cars, are unlikely catch fire when at home charging.  I have NEVER heard of that happening.

The lithium-ion battery fires during the charging process that we hear so much about are caused by cheap, defective or mismatched batteries that kids or low income workers use to charge their vehicles.  They may be charging a large number of them overnight at one location, which may cause overheating and fire.

An electric vehicle like an automobile will not have this problem.  A lot of the products we use have lithium batteries and are perfectluy safe to use as long as we follow instructions and use the parts indicated.  My phone, my laptop, lamp, fan, hair tools, that spinning nail manicure tool, the little lighted compact, all these things have lithium ion batteries.  They are safe.  Products just need to be used as indicated to be safe.

Gas stoves will be banned in NYS in 2026 for structures of seven stories or less and in 2029 for larger buildings. The law would not apply to existing buildings.  The reason for this is that gas stoves emit poisonous gases that cause respiratory problems such as asthma, particularly in children, and are known carcinogens.  NYC, among other municipalities, has already banned natural-gas hookups for new construction projects.

I think it would be good to reduce the incidence of asthma and cancer.

I know plastic is bad for the environment, and we working on that too.  NYS has banned plastic shopping bags.  Most people bring reusable bags to the stores when shopping.  I do.

So much for free enterprise we used to enjoy.

Our government is trying to control our gas stoves, our vehicles wanting electric only... with batteries that catch fire and burn down our house when parked in the garage and now our electronics devices.

Agree 100%!  The government "broke up" AT&T into Baby Bells and looks what's happened.  The only people who benefit from these antitrust suits are the lawyers.

And I do think the government has more important items on their agenda than what people cook with--LOL!!!

@kaydee50  I am not sure about your beef with the bell lawsuit is about. More competition brought lower prices.  And now many/most of us don't need land lines.  Elder people who think they have land lines because their phones are plugged in are using cell service, cheap.  And the cheap wi-fi that T-mobile is offering is also a cell phone line.  I tried it for a few days but returned before the trial period ended.  I have a good price for cable, and not sure I want to let go yet.  These innovations are bringing us products that did not exist and that have greatly improved our lives.

My phone is much better than my ginormous entertainment center from the 1980s.

@LTT1 @1tuffcookie   I think I know what you are talking about with the charging cable.  A friend of mine had that problem, the phone wouldn't charge, but he played with it to get good contact, and hasn't had that problem in a while. I think we need to be gentler with our phones.

@1tuffcookie I also had that problem with the iPhone screen drakening on me.  There is a subscreen that one can access by sliding the finger from the top right corner of the screen down.  It has several controls there, and one of them is for how bright the scree is.  I go there to turn bluetooth on and off.  I think I may be touching the brightness control accidentally.  Anyway, you can adjust brightness there and other things.

Hope this helps.

A problem that I have been having that I do thing is the subject of the lawsuit is with texting.  Like other posters, the thing that I most love about my iphone is how seamless it works with other devices.  I send text messages from my laptop as well as my phone.  I think that doesn't always work well when i text from my macbook and the other person doesn't have apple.  This guess is based on my observation that their texts are in green bubbles, not blue bubbles.  And not all gthe green messages make it to all the devices.  And I think this is one of the issues in the case, that messaging with non-apple products does not work as well.  We'll see I guess.

As this has been Apple's policy since day 1 w/all of their products, why did the DOJ wait so long?

I am going to assume nothing was done in the last administration.  I have worked in the federal government and lawsuits sometimes occur after years of negotiations.  They have to understand the products before they sue.  So DOJ or the relevant agency sends letters, asks for information, they learn how the company does what it does, these conversations can last years.  DOJ is loath to file a lawsuit they are not certain they can win.  Very risk averse in my experience.  Much more so than private litigants.

Re: 😲 DOJ has filed suit against Apple! 😮

Apple puts the "mono" in monopoly. They won't let others use their hardware. They won't let others use their software. Try to build something commercially that's Apple-compatible that's not Apple and you'll get sued by Apple. They don't sell their chips to others to use in devices. They won't let other companies make Apple-compatible phones or computers.

Some independent folks make "Hackintosh" computers where they use non-Apple hardware to make an Apple-compatible computer, often at a much lower cost, but Apple does not approve of it and will work to shut down such devices as soon as they detect them.

They are the most anti-competitive company in the world and they flaunt it. And they've gotten away with it due to friends in high places. Maybe that's finally coming to an end? We'll have to see.
