Re: ** DOES ANYONE KNOW SHORTHAND? **

@LilacTree  Chronic pain IS exhausting.  It just seems to drain away your energy.  It takes strength to maneuver through your day with limited mobility.  If you have to make an effort to move in a particular way that won't cause pain, that is also a robber of energy. You seem to have a good handle on it, though.  I think the decrease in energy comes with age no matter if there is disease or not.....it just makes it harder if something else is going on.   Wow, I didn't mean to make this into a "downer" response.

Have a happy day, @LilacTree!

Re: ** DOES ANYONE KNOW SHORTHAND? **

The third "word" is the challenge.  Some see a straight line, some see curves.  IF it is an "s"  -- then a   STRAIGHT LINE followed by another "s",  it  could be "statements".

And the second "word" could be "to do".

So it might be:

Back to do statements --with the  OR  at the  -- bank.

Promise this is my last observation.  Shorthand fo me  was more than fifty years ago. The skill  --  back then  --  could lead to a little higher paycheck.    How the world has changed,  but in a good way.

Might be interesting to know if the date above the shorthand is when your Mother went back to work.   Might find the information in either bank records if they still exist or in  Social Security records.    This has been in interesting journey down a long-ago memory lane,  Thank you for sharing.  our best to you.

@LilacTree

I didn't know Gregg was taught in NJ since I didn't know anyone from there. Yes - I used the steno pads with the wide lines --- and Pitman was usually written in pencil so that dark and light lines could be seen. I still write most of my notes in shorthand -- so convenient.

It's definitely Gregg shorthand and I read it as "Back to work at the bank" broken down as Back  to  work  at the  bank.

I'd assume the date written above was (as the OP suggested) the date she started back.  (BTW:  10/28/68 was a Monday, so it makes sense.)

You can find most of the symbols for  Gregg online, if you need to decipher something.  I'd say it looked like she made the "t" in "to" a bit long, compared to her other strokes but, if it worked for her, that was all that was important.

I loved Gregg shorthand "back in the day" and used it to take notes in college or write things I didn't want someone else reading.

It's a pity it didn't say "this is the combination to the safe where all my millions are hidden"!  (Only joking.)  Woman Wink

@Venezia  Wow, thanks for taking the time to look up the day of the week.....I never thought to do that.  Wouldn't that be something......a combination......I would hope there would be directions to the safe, because as far as I know, my parents never had one.......unless it was one at the bank LOL!!!
