I read somewhere lastnight that a one week strike takes six weeks to recover.

Dockworkers who have shut down 36 ports from Maine to Texas will cost the US economy billions of dollars - and cause shortages of goods and price rises within days, experts warn. The strike, which began on Monday night, will first hit perishable imports like bananas, and then avocados, pineapples and fruit juices. If the walkout lasts more than a few weeks, a work stoppage could lead to higher prices and delays in a wide range of goods reaching households and businesses.

@elated Exactly, that's why I can't believe some of the comments saying it won't effect them.  It will effect everyone and it won't be good for the economy as well.

I don't think many understand consequences and economics. Many people are already struggling and this just escalates their circumstances.

@reiki604.  Thanks for the information but I'm aware of all the sources.  There just isn't enough in other foods except for oranges which are too acid for me.

@Kachina624  A half-cup serving of an avocado has approximately 360 milligrams of potassium. A banana only has about 330 milligrams.

I was reading that although things like cereal are made in the US, the packaging and boxes are imported, so that alone will cause some slowdown getting it to the store shelves.

Plastics, wood, furniture, car parts, clothing, toys, medical supplies and medications, produce, and many other things are imported to the gulf and east coast ports. Exporting cars that are sold in other countries will be a huge hit on automakers, so I guess car prices will go up even more; DH badly needs a new car and this isn't going to help; even used cars are beyong the reach of many now. The stoppage at the ports hurts both incoming and outgoing goods. Let's hope the strike is over soon.

With this strike, the devastation from Helene, and the fighting in some parts of the world I would hope the powers that be would consider stepping up and doing their jobs.

Can't imagine how the powers that be would want Americns to be forced to deal with even more inflation and higher prices on groceriers, gas, and other goods. I know that construction materials are very dependent upon the east coast ports. With all the devastation from Helene, getting relief materials to rebuild and repair is a priority; let's hope the strike does not hurt that supply chain.

I just read that it's official.  What else could go wrong (I'm aware, plenty)  Wonder when prices will start to increase.  Maybe already?

My daughter in law just went to Costco. I asked her to pick up one package of Charmin TP for me, which she was able to do. She saw people with several packages of TP in their carts. Kirkland TP was already gone and another customer saw her Charmin and was told that was gone too.

She wanted to get water but that was gone.

There can't be shortages already but people panicking and hoarding will make things worse.

Stores will need to limit quanity of products like they did during Covid.

I hope the strike doesn't last long.
