DIY dermatology: a disgusting and dangerous practice!

I was reading a query from a Beauty about how to remove a blackhead from her son's forehead. Others had chimed in to report that what they thought was a blackhead was really something else- melanoma, cyst, etc. and that she should seek out a dermatologist.

While I was researching some more, I came across a site about zit popping. They had a VIDEO of a man who had a C-cup sized cyst on his back, and his wife? popping it in front of others in the backyard.

Full disclaimer: I have a STRONG stomach, so it didn't bother me, but you have been warned! It is gross, so watch it at your own risk.

It appears that there is a niche on the web for "DIY dermatology." There are tons of videos of people doing stuff just like this. I know that people can't afford to go to the doctor or the hospital for every MINOR issue, but I honestly can't understand why:

1) people don't seek medical attention BEFORE something gets to be this size

2) they extract things in unsafe/unsanitary conditions, setting themselves and others up for staph or MRSA infections or even sepsis

3) they would allow others to do this to them without some sort of pain management and reconstruction. This man (in this video) has to be horribly disfigured after this.

Re: DIY dermatology: a disgusting and dangerous practice!

I saw that a couple years ago and still have nightmares about it. It is one of the most foul things I have seen. As for people not seeking medical care early on and trying to treat it themselves, there are lots of reasons. Some don't have insurance, some are embarrassed, some probably don't realize how much worse it can get or think it will just go away. I can't imagine the pain that would cause when it gets so swollen and infected. There was another man who had a cyst similar in size, he filmed himself over a period of days trying to get it to "pop" against his bathroom door. He literally slammed himself against the door, and it finally worked, that might be the 2nd most foul thing I've seen. He finally had to seek medical treatment because he had a crater in his back that needed to be packed with antibiotics and eventually stitched up.

Definitely NOBODY should watch that video, especially at breakfast time... yuck!!! {#emotions_dlg.sad}

Hi Belle, thanks for your thoughts. This flu is a beast. I felt awful on Weds and Thurs, then yesterday my fever finally broke and I was feeling a little better, still had the congested cough though. I had a horrible night coughing and now my fever is back with a vengeance, so I guess I just need to ride it out. The worst part is my dad does have a cough that started last night so I put him on a decongestant. He had a flu shot, but I know that isn't a guarantee. He isn't running a fever, so that part is good. I'm gonna keep an eye on him today and if he gets worse we'll be making a visit to the ER. I wouldn't wish this stuff on my worst enemy, it's nasty. I keep seeing news reports of hospitals filling up all over with flu cases, hope everyone that hasn't had it can keep from getting it.

Oh, that's bad--- around here I know of a lot of the novovirus (sp??) stomach problem going around but not so much the flu like you're having---- hope you and your Dad will be okay.

LolaK, sorry for the O/T.
