Pandas are actually biologically equipt (teeth, digestive tract) to be carnivores and not to have a diet consisting soley of plants (bamboo). Hence the reason they have to eat such large amounts of bamboo and cannot fully extract the nutrients of bamboo (I think they an digest only about 20% of bamboo). No one knows for sure why they moved away from eating meat to a diet almost soley consisting of bamboo but it is one of the reasons why their numbers have dwindled so severely.
