I know a lot of people who feel this way, including members of my own family. In fact, I think the only reason my kids don't do it is because they think I need to be near a hospital and they want to be near me. Once I'm gone, I truly think they will go off in different directions, and I hate that thought.

I know one thing . . . unless LBI sinks, my one daughter who lives there will never leave.

In my dreams I go off to a peaceful & quiet place, with no traffic noise, no noisy neighbors, no tv. I'd have to have phone & internet, to keep in touch with family & to order books, music & yarn. I'd have a lifetime supply of books & yarn for knitting.

Then reality rears its ugly head & I know I'll have to be happy just finding a relatively peaceful, safe & quiet place to live out my retirement years. Yes, I know I have control over whether or not I have tv, phone, internet.

I told him I would stock it with tons of food....and he could get a generator...lol...but so many are very serious.....He works at home and all his friends talk about this stuff all the time.

I can shut off news which is not problem...we don't get paper....

Sylvia, Vail is so awesome.....I can "bug out" there haha

aspen is not easy to get to, but it's right around the corner, so to speak
Aspen is the last place I'd go to get away from it all. Tons of people, high prices and traffic gridlock, not to mention you can't find a place to park. In the winter, one way in and out.

Well he is very healthy......the thing is he and his friends really believe someone could attack us....the fed, economy failure etc. The place he likes does have a great hospital within 25 minutes....I had no idea how many people feel this way until I went to Costco and saw all this dehydrated food there. We live in weird times I do agree.

How could anyone go off grid.....it would be impossible.....!

A huge percentage of people living in rural Alaska live off the grid. It's very possible, even in the lower 48. I'm not sure why they want to do it as it's a hard life and only for the very healthy and energetic.

Sorry, he may not be crazy but he sounds paranoid.

Doesn't sound paranoid to me. Just sounds like someone that is tired of dealing with a lot of k-rap. I'm not paranoid but I'm sick of the city and people. I value my solitude and privacy and just want to have peace and quiet.

No not paranoid either.....his friends are former high racking vets.....they just want their families safe in case. Most people don't want to see there is any danger as we have always been safe in the country...except 9/11.

April, Groups like that became very popular in the 80s and they said the same thing. Some of them called themselves militia groups, others said they were survivalists. Nothing they feared happened.

It is paranoia and you have to ask yourself if that's how you want to live, always worried about being attacked, avoiding other people except those who have the same mindset. It's certainly not a happy way to live.

Especially if it involves a number of guns and ammo.
