I'm kind of in the middle of no where, and even so, someone rang my doorbell this morning visiting for a church! (Not mine)

....I imagine the world is a heck of a lot better now than it was during the dark ages. Of course, he isn't crazy. He just lost his perspective.

I don't mean to sound rude or...whatever...but has he had a checkup lately? Is there something going on health-related that might have affected his thinking about this? Is this a sudden change in him or ... ?

I don't find her dh is crazy for wanting to do this. More and more people are opting this way of life.

I want to stay home!
He sounds perfectly sane to me. Many of my friends over decades have told me I would do just fine in the situation you mention about your husband. Some in fact have suggested I give it a try for a few years.
I prefer animals to people and I really like most people. People are unpredictable while most animals are not. Don't have any degrees except my GED certificate but I doubt that ones formal education has much to do with our desires.

I'm thinking about your comment that your husband has many friends who are thinking the same thing.
Are you talking basically about going off the grid to more of a survivalist style of living?

If we won the lottery, we'd definitely move to a place, well off of the beaten path!

It's a function of who you choose as your friends and how you spend your time. If all your friends are doomsday Armageddonists you are going to start to think the same way. Same goes for TV viewing and internet time.

An old friend did that. He has a beautiful place in the mountains. After a couple of years, he had a very serious heart attack. His wife called 911 and the nearest town sent out an ambulance. They couldn't find his home and he almost died waiting. They had to helicopter him out. The bills were outrageous.
IMO, that's the kind of thing that has to be considered when thinking of moving well off the beaten path. That, and running across the guys like those who showed up at Cliven Bundy's ranch, or the marijuana growers who love that kind of area for growing. It happened in northern California, I hope they've gotten rid of them by now.

I couldn't agree with you more!
