DEER Sunday 09/10/2023

[ Edited ]

It was an interesting afternoon. One of our big bucks has begun the very painful process of rubbing the velvet off his antlers.  They use whatever they can.  First are some pictures of the "damage."  For those of you on Mama and PapaWick's Wildlife" Facebook page, I have a video of him in the lot next to us violently rubbing it.

These pictures are from a bit earlier.  It wasn't Brad who did the damage, but he will start soon.

She wasn't upset, and of course she won't be out if we see any of the boys acting up.

I didn't realizing that getting rid of their velvet is a painful process for the bucks. Poor Brad! Smiley Sad But I love he is being hand fed.

Little Willow looks precious! Love her mat, she always has the nicest toys and bedding.

@MamaWick

Mama Wick, what is the reason for rubbing off the velvet?  What happens if a buck does not do that?

@maximillian  the velvet provides nutrients and vascular supply for antlers beneath it to grow.  Once growth us complete, the velvet becomes painful and, I guess, itchy to the buck and he rubs it off, leaving the hard, bony antler.

@MamaWick  Wow. I really enjoy learning about the deer and their trials.  Poor babies.  They do come out the other end looking good and no doubt feeling better.

Woofs and hugs to adorable Miss Willow White. 🥰 Glad to know she's always safe.  You and PapaWick take care too.

Woofs and love to sweet Cricket in heaven.  💕🌈
