@lgfan   that's what I think as well!  I think he may have money in guardianship/trust.  My brother does. The loopholes to that make it impossible to spend. The other thing I am thinking, is any money that is left from when he worked (and he never worked really) is gone or tied to his dad's company . The only screen writing he did I believe was for his dads movie on his addiction. He has been homeless most of his life, or dependent on family.  Why else would he be living in back at his parents? I do know , he has to be low income and unable to pay for defense to qualify for PD.

Re: DEADLY MYSTERY AT ROB REINER'S HOUSE

I found this at legal aid for State Of California.  They are strict, as all denfense comes out of funds County of Los Angeles...

A person who is in custody and unable to post bail is presumed to be eligible for public defender services. The court’s goal is to determine if the defendant’s financial obligations prevent them from hiring their own counsel.

Required Financial Information and Documentation

To request a public defender, you must provide the court with a detailed accounting of your financial situation. This information is entered onto a form called a “Defendant’s Financial Statement” or a “Financial Affidavit,” such as form CR-105, which can be obtained from the court clerk or the local public defender’s office.

To complete this form accurately, you should collect:

  • Recent pay stubs
  • Your most recent tax returns
  • Current bank statements for all checking and savings accounts
  • Proof of enrollment and benefits received for any government aid, such as CalFresh or Medi-Cal
  • Records of major monthly expenses, like rent receipts, mortgage statements, utility bills, and childcare costs

The form requires you to list all income, assets, debts, and expenses under penalty of perjury. Providing false information on the statement can lead to a separate criminal charge.

@shoekitty I think that Nick could not receive legal representation by a Public Defender in CA as he likely has financial assets out of range  to qualify for that.

You can be assigned a public defender and required to pay back some, if not all of the cost to the Public Defender's Office.  The defendant may not have the full money upfront.

We don't know what provisions the Reiners made for their son.  I really don't think he had free access to a large amount of money.  He might have been assigned an attorney / accountant to handle his money.

@shoekitty, I've been waiting to hear that Nick is not the "victim" and it's all b/c he had those abusive parents!!!

@NYwoman  @Q-Checker. Hi there!   He did  have financial review. He was granted, and now has a Public Defender.  He was granted one Jan 7, I believe. When Alan Jackson resigned, it was announced. I do agree about finances.  As I have stated in my previous posts, he can't just get a PD, if he wants one, lol. But who knows what is going on. I know,.... no way would Los Angeles County make special  situations for him. I agree with you, more meets the eye than we know.  I believe if he still has money, it is tied up, or under a special needs trust trust.  Or, it's tied up with family accounts as parents as signees on his account. Who knows.  Lots hasn't been answered at this time.

@febe1  not from me for sure. I think something we all don't know went on.  Possibly his mental illness, or he just snapped. But I am sure he did it. His parents were wonderful by all accounts.  But, soon all will be revealed. I'm kinda anxious to hear about it myself.

Not guilty by reason of insanity is very very hard to get. 1% of felonies do so.

Addiction and mental illness are not a pass. There are many Americans that have both and never kill their parents.

@febe1   I agree.  It is so hard to prove.  There have been murderers I thought they were mentally ill for sure. .  And they were certified.   it is just they found that person knowing right from wrong at time  they committed murder.  He may be psychotic and very separated from reality. I think it was reported here. But he will be checked out , given best attention and we will know someday. Something is going on for sure.

Anyone who kills their parents or children is probably insane, unless there is a financial motive or abuse by the parents to justify it.

His attorney stated emphatically today that he believed that Nick is innocent.

Even if he is found innocent by reason of insanity he will not be released.  He will spend the rest of his life in a mental institution.
