Most of what Sam's sells in Oklahoma for salad greens, kits, and other produce is Taylor farms.  I'll bet Walmart greens are a lot from that grower as well.

@Sooner

I made a special trip to Walmart yesterday to buy Little Leaf Farms lettuce, which is supposed to be safe due to its growing environment.  It was the only nearby source for LIttle Leaf when I looked it up.  So props to WM for that.

@shoesnbags Isn't that hydroponic?  Water is a major issue and Oklahoma and Arkansas have fought for decades over water pollution of the Illinois River from chicken farms in the northern areas between the two states.  So depends.  Hydroponic is no guarantee.

@Sooner Hydroponic but not from river water or any ground water.  They use rainwater.  There is a video on the website that explains the process and answers questions people have raised. The owner takes you through the whole process.  Very interesting.

@shoesnbags Still, it's plants and people handling them and water that can be contaminated along the way.  I guess I am super cautious because I was raised with farming--and have seen what it takes to grow, harvest, haul and get farm products to market and there are lots and lots of steps involved that are not as clean as you'd like sometimes.

@Sooner Actually it's mechanized so that human hands don't ever touch the lettuce before it's packaged.  You might enjoy watching the video.

Everything has horror stories. Farmed fish, wild caught fish, wine, water, salad: boxed, bagged, home grown. Organic, non-organic. Eat at restaurant or at home.

Anything that I ever looked up always has horror stories.

All I can do is eat and hope it doesn't make me sick or kill me.

@shoesnbags Thanks but honestly, it's still processed through things human hands touch, still put in containers, still hauled somewhere in shipping containers etc.  Like I said, I grew up around dirt, harvesters, shipping, packing plants, grain storage and hauling, processing.

I just saw something this morning about how farm expenses are growing way faster than farm income.  Don't know what will happen with that.  And these little family farms, roadside stands, I don't know how in the world they can make any kind of living on that scale.  Farming in the US isn't getting the credit it deserves.  But it sure gets bad publicity when it something happens.

Sorry to get on my soap box.  Not all aimed at you, but prompted by my disbelief that any plant raising technique is without jeopardy.

@Sooner  I have been thinking about trying too grow my own lettuce. I don't think I will ever trust purchasing lettuce again. I grow some tomatoes, cucumber, and peppers in my limited space. I think growing lettuce is more time consuming.

That's ok @Sooner. I'm sure you know a LOT more about farming than I do, city girl born and raised.  But as I highllghted up above no human hands touch this particular lettuce.  The video showed that a conveyor belt moves the growing row of lettuce to the package and the machine takes the lettuce, tears off the top edible part and puts it into the plastic shell.  I love salads with lettuce as the base so I'll just buy the one with the lowest risk. I take a risk every time I get into my car or do any of a number of other things every day.  Where I live I need to save my worrying for hurricanes lol.

@shoesnbags Humans have to fix the clogs in the conveyer belt, unjam the lettuce when it gets wadded up. . . and the water is in pipes that leak and break, supply gets tainted.  I'm just saying there is no produce that doesn't carry some risk, that is almost always acceptable risk.  Until i isn't.  Wash wash and handle carefully.

I always take off a couple rows of outer leaves, discard broken veggies or split carrots etc, brown spots, nicks, anywhere bacteria could get in produce.  Because I know it's so so easy. . .

Not here yet. I'm still eating organic blueberries, strawberries & lettuce. No problems so far.

@Nightowlz  Organic foods can get cyclosporiasis from water that is infected & also from human handling.

You have nothing to worry about as the disease is not in your State.

@Mz iMac

I figured that but I'm eating it anyways. I have already ate a salad and blueberries and strawberries today.

Same day I posted I saw on the news we have over 50 cases here.

Re: 😳😱 Cyclosporiasis 🫨🥺

The contaminated lettuce was imported from Taylor farms in Mexico.  That's what I understand. It's not all lettuce on the shelves.
