I'm the OP, my sister lost her beloved Cockapoo back in October of last year. She didn't know if or when she would be ready for another dog. She had been looking at videos and pictures of dogs online. Flash forward to a month ago it was her birthday, her husband surprised her with the cutest Cavapoo puppy! The dog came from a breeder from either North or South Carolina and was escorted on a flight to New York. He is so cute, but you do forget how much work a puppy is.

@Jordan2.  Sorry for your loss and your sister's family as well.

About 4 years ago we had to euthanize our dog..dh and I were with her when she passed at the vet's office.  We both cried like babies and did so when we got home...it's gut wrenching.

I have had to decide this with two dogs and one cat, it is the hardest thing, I always hoped my pets would die in their sleep when they got older so I wouldn't have to make that decision.  The time I decided to let nature take its course I now regret, that kitty was not in good shape when he passed, putting them out of pain is the kindest thing you can do for them.

My thoughts to you.  I had to let go of two pets in my life.   My beloved Collie when I was 18 and my sweet kitty when I was in my 40's.  It was not easy.

My kitty let me know he was ready.   He was ill and he just had no life left in him.  He was staying strong for me I always believe.  It is so hard to part with them, but it's the most caring thing to do.   They do not suffer anymore.

Any kind of grief is hard.   It's ok to be sad and it's ok to grieve through it all.

Take care and know the beloved pet is safe now and watching over everyone forever.

@croemer I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. I sometimes wonder is it worth having a dog when you know one day the decision to end their life comes, it's heartbreaking but still worth the years of happiness and joy they give you.

I know exactly what you mean. I had always wanted a Shih-Tzu.

While traveling my husband came across exactly what I had mentioned a little black, female Shih-Tzu, I had had to put my cat to sleep 6 months before and said I needed a few days to think it over. He talked to the family who had ...what became my special girl...if we could have until Monday to decide. He said sure. Well come Monday I decided I wanted to take her. We found out he had taken her to a bird store and sold her on Sunday.Man Sad My husband asked where we could find her and he tried to talk him into one of the males from the litter...but my husband told him...I wanted a girl. So he told him where we could find her. When he got to the shop...there she sat in a bird cage of all things! Well we had to pay more for her than the original owner quoted us...but we had almost 14 years of the most loving pup...and as bad as it feels...I feel blessed we had her. I am just gutted at her loss...will never regret our time with her...but it is so painful.

Our dog had puppies with my parents dog. Both of the parent dogs are gone now and the puppies will be 14 in June. My brother kept one, my parents kept one, and we kept one. My brother's dog passed almost two years ago and my Dad's dog passed in January. He had to be put to sleep. He had CHF and Cancer. My Dad couldn't be in the room when it happened, but I needed to be there for him. I was there when he was born and there when he passed. I'm crying as I write this. We still have our puppy. He has been by my side non stop since my husband passed away. I wake up several times a night to make sure he's still breathing. Now that his brother's are gone it makes me more and more aware of the short time I have left with him.

@Jordan2 - I'm so happy to hear about the new ray of sunshine in your family! Losing a pet is one of the hardest things we go through. It's losing a member of your family.

I had to smile when I read about your sister having a "baby" in her home. I have a good friend who went through the same thing your sister did, but her Golden Retriever was only about 6. A while later another one found his way "home." She had to be so careful. He liked to chew shoes and dishcloths. She said it was like having a toddler again!

How sweet of her husband to surprise her! I'm a kitty mom, but both of my two closest friends have pups. One lost her beloved Westie last fall too. She didn't want another one right away, but her husband was already looking. Her new little boy arrived about a month ago, and has put a smile on her face again.

Enjoy your new nephew!   Smiley Happy
