Maybe you'll get more answers if you put this in the beauty forum.

@Kelleyg @From MAC's site:

"M·A·C does not test on animals. We do not own any animal testing facilities and we never ask others to test on animals for us. While some governments conduct animal testing to prove safety before they will allow us to sell our products, M·A·C has never tested on animals and we continue to be a leader in the movement to end animal testing globally.  To this end, we are proud to partner with Institute for In Vitro Sciences to expand the use and acceptance of non-animal testing methods worldwide."

Don't be fooled by this @Mindy D .  MAC sells its products in China.  That means it's not cruelty free.  Look at the wording of their statement carefully.

According to the dictionary, cruelty-free is a cosmetic or other product developed without being tested on animals; pertaining to a product created without being tested on animals.

They’re a bit more to that definition when it comes to cosmetics. For a product or company to be considered cruelty-free it needs to meet the following criteria:

  • Does not test their products or ingredients on animals
  • Does not authorize third-parties to test their products or ingredients on animals
  • Does not sell in a country where animal testing is required

When a company is declaring their cruelty-free status they are talking about their manufacturing process and materials in the present time.

So MAC saying that they themselves do not engage directly in animal testing is in fact a truthful statement.

It is.  Neither does Estee Lauder, however to be called "Cruelty Free" you can't sell your products in a country the requires animal testing.  China does in fact "require it."

The definition of "Cruelty Free" is provided upthread (that I posted).  Estee Lauder and Company (including MAC) is not a cruelty free company by sheer virtue that they sell in China.

Cruelty Free Kitty dot com had this to say about MAC:

MAC is not cruelty-free. They may test on animals, either themselves, through their suppliers, or through a third party. Brands who fall under this category could also be selling products where animal testing is required by law.

Their Parent company is not CF as someone mentioned.

While MAC says they do not test, their suppliers or a third party company certainly must, especially if they are selling in China
