Since I just read the survey hoax thread, I thought I would mention this one.  DH loves Craigs List.  Recently he was interested in a piece of lawn equipment and replied through the secure Craigs List link.  That guy requested an email address so he could send photos.  I told DH I was very leery of this, but he is like a little kid and insisted.  Of course the guy never replied and since then I have been getting spammed with obscene emails, dating sites with foul language, etc.  Google very nicely puts these in Trash and I never open them.  I think what is going on is these jerks sell email lists to these various shady sites.

Of course most of the 'communication' on various sites are just scams.  Folks can't wait to sign on and chat and exchange their lies and exaggerations.  They consider themselves 'techie'.  The crooks then just have a field day.  If laws were put into place with serious consequences for all the garbage, maybe things wouldn't be so bad.

Those that scam and rip off are way ahead of the suckers that fall for their ploys.

Even if that would work, which is questionable, it would require the laws be internationally binding and enforceable which would require worldwide cooperation and agreement.  That ship has sailed.

My DH was looking for a particular older vehicle.  He started to communicate with a guy out of state who supposedly had this vehicle.  There were no pictures posted and everytime DH asked him to post photos, he wouldn't do it but would just respond more and more about the car.  DH wanted the guy to actually call him rather than trying to do all this through text.

I finally told DH something was off and to quit corresponding with him. I told him I had my doubts the guy even had the car at all.  Nothing ever came of all that and I'm not sure if the seller was just a little off or never had the car.

When my daughter was looking for a car, she found a really nice one on CL. There was a story about it... was someones child's car who had passed away and they just couldn't look at it anymore. My daughter was in tears while telling me this. the more she read to me, the more it sounded scammy. So...I googled the entire sob story and it was a hoax.

Makes me sick the stories people tell for money.

My son rented a lovely apartment through Craigs list.  It was a beautiful house that had an apt. over the garage.  Just lovely.  He moved in on Saturday.  Went to breakfast on Sunday and when he came back the apartment was empty!!!  He called the police and they walked over to the neighbors..He said the place had been vacant for 4 or 5 months.  The man that rented him the apt was not who owned the house .  He was out 2 months security, a months rent, and everything he owned,,,,including his clothes.  Its a terrible world out there.

Oh, it's not all bad. We got our current dog through CL a few years ago from a wonderful guy and his girlfriend (now wife) who were moving and couldn't take her with them. Turned out that wasn't a fake story; he took over his grandparents' bakery in San Francisco. He and my husband occasionally post on  FB.

Cody (see my avatar) is the best of all the dogs we've ever had. And yes, I do say that about all of them. :-)

(Well, there was that poor, addled Cocker, bless his little heart)

@meem120  Oh my gosh!  How awful!  I'm so sorry for your son.  Craig's List is sounding worse and worse to me.
