Costco Drops Other Shoe, Raises Membership Fee By 9%

The last time Costco raise its membership fees was well over five years ago, and the world has changed since 2011. So has the consumer sales industry, a broad umbrella that encompasses both failing chains like JC Penney and successful ones like Nordstrom. You can argue the finer points of what falls into the catch-all of "retail," but there's little doubt that investors are looking for any hint of trouble to punish a stock.

So when Costco announced last year that it was considering raising its membership fees by 9% (to $60 from $55 a year for regular memberships, double that for executive memberships), some analysts claimed it was proof that Costco was slipping, even extrapolating that the days of big-box, membership stores were numbered. One Morningstar analyst went so far as to confuse revenues from membership (35 million members @ $55 or even $110 a year) with Costco's net operating profit.

Gas here in Michigan at Costco is always cheaper sometimes as much as 20 cents a gallon. We like our Costco membership.

Me neither.  The only thing around my neck of the woods are BJ's.  I think there is a Sam's club 2 towns away from me in another county.

  I love Costco.I go about twice a month.A $5 increase isn't going to deter me. The deals I get more than cover it!!
