I have a question about the change over, maybe someone knows the answer.

We have an Amex card, but not attached to Costco - so having it replaced isn't the problem.  We were able to use it there for our purchases.

We also have a Visa card but it's through Chase.  Will we be able to use that card for our purchases or are we going to have to get a Citibank issued card?

@CelticCrafter  If you've been able to use a non-Costco AMEX, I'm guessing you'll be able to use a non-Costco Visa.  However, I would point out that there is no annual fee with the Costco edition cards.  You might also want to check the benefits (rebate percentages, warranty extensions, rental car discounts, etc.) that are associated with the Costco edition cards and see how that actual cash back compares to what you currently have, if it's a cash back situation or points that you have to spend where they allow you to.

@HappyDaze & @JeanLouiseFinch

I pay my Costco AMEX bill in full every month and I have been getting a pre-approved offer at least once a week in the mail and several e-mail offers from AMEX.  I hope the benefits are as good on the new card.

I was at Costco in Phoenix yesterday.  They are handing out flyers that explain the change which will happen on June 20rh.  Like others, I have an Amex  card not through Costco so I will continue to use it other places.  Meanwhile I have a Visa card already and according to the flyer, Costco will accept any Visa card.  No need to get a new card.

Yes but like @JeanLouiseFinch mentioned to another poster there will be extra perks available using the Citi visa versus just a regular visa. But if you don't care about the extra cashback and other perks, then yes, no need to get another card.

Coincidentally, I received mail from the Citi group yesterday - didn't get it out of my box until late in the evening.  Anyway, these are the highlights from the mailer for current Costco American Express Cardholders:

The new Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi will arrive prior to 6-20-16 and starting on 6-20-16 you can earn cash back everywhere you use your card - 4% on eligible gas worldwide for the first $7,000 and 1% thereafter, 3% on restaurant and eligible travel purchases worldwide, 2% on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com, and 1% on all other purchases.

Now - June 2016 - Continue to use your exisiting Costco American Expresss Card as your membership card and for purchases everywhere American Express is accepted.  Direct any payments or billing inquiries to American Express.

April 2016 - Citi will send you more information about the transfer of your Costco card from American Express to Citi

May 2016 - a new card will be mailed to you and you can start using it on 6-20-2016.  There's no need to re-apply and we won't pull a credit report as part of the account transfer process.

June 20, 2016 - Your card will be available for use and the rewards you've earned will transfer to your new card.  After 6-20-2016, remember to provide your new card information to companies who automatically bill your card and online retailers where you've saved your information.

Also - FYI, the new cards will have the Costco emblem on the back and also have your photo, the same as the current card.

The card also comes with similar benefits regarding damage & theft protection, extended warranty, travel benefits, and the annual reward being included in the February statement.

@JeanLouiseFinch thank you for this! That is excellent about 4% back on gas versus 3% and also an increased amount allotted vs the $4000 with Amex and 3% on restaurant vs. 2% and 2% cashback from Costco purchases vs. 1%! Looks like we will save even more money!

Re: Costco AMEX to Be Replaced with Citigroup Visa in May/June

We have had at least two mailers from AMEX reaching out to us for their new CC that will replace the Costco/AMEX card.  It has another name, but I don't recall the name now.

If you remember the AMEX card shopping at Costco had additional perks. Additional warranty above and beyond the Costco when you purchased certain items.  I do hope that warranty will still be in place after the breakup for those purchases.

The AMEX card has our photo on the back of the card.  Will the new card have this same photo on the back when it arrives in the mail?

Re: Costco AMEX to Be Replaced with Citigroup Visa in May/June

When I wanted to stop using my Costco AMEX, I just transferred all my charges I'd been doing through that card to another reward card.

I also accepted AMEX's offer for a new card with different benefits  and I've already earned more on that new card than I did in my last two years on the Costco card!  All the rewards are slightly different as we move from card to card and we need to think how we spend money -  just knowing how others spend and what their rewards were doesn't necessarily work for everybody.

I have yet to see the new Citi/Costco offer, so I have no idea whether I'll use their card.  I've been using Costco so little that I may even decide to drop my Costco membership this summer when it expires.

I know what you mean Millieshops.  With just the two of us we don't buy in bulk.  The protections and concierge service on our electronic purchases keep us at costco, seems like a poor reason to keep the membership.

Even though it's mostly "just the two of us", I think there is much about Costco to keep our membership active.
