@JJsMom wrote:I'm surprised by those who give us their real names and go into detail about their lives, especially medical histories, even discussing their spouse's medical history at length. Why do people do this? Attention? Loneliness?
I've discussed my husband's illness because we went through HELL 5 years ago and have been desperate to seek out any and all information. Yes we've been through an army of doctors all who say different things so by putting it out there I might reach someone else who's in the same boat. The bottom line is doctors just don't know about his rare condition and until you see someone go downhill the way my husband has you might understand how heartbreaking it is.
I never know who may be in a similar situation and could direct me to what might have worked for them. So for me it wasn't "loneliness or attention" but desperation for my husband to get well. It's worth the risk for me to post. So far I haven't had any problems.

I have read most of this thread, and do not disagree with the good advice it contains. That said, however, I cannot help but point out trying to protect one's personal information is futile when the very act of signing into this message board exposes us all to some degree of risk.
QVC cannot fix their own sign in page. For too long now, the simple act of signing in opens our order histories. That page, with links to other vital information, must be left open in the background to navigate to and through the forums. Our first names and email addresses are exposed.
I just deleted my credit card information from 'My Account.' I no longer trust QVC with that information.

I take your point about the information in My Account - but not for the same reason you give.
In the past, people have reported that they get notices on their browser or with their malware software that the ordering aspect of the site isn't secure. Consequently, they don't like to leave their data open to hacking on a site that isn't really all that secure in general.
I'm on an iPad. When I sign in and am redirected to my account page, I simply click on a bookmark I have and it brings me to Community Chat. I have no other browser tab open - but if I did, all I'd have to do is close it - if I'm on the forums I don't "have to" leave it open because I'm done with it.
Alternatively, I can click on Full Site at the bottom of the signed-in Account page, and then click again to get to Blogs & Forums. I then close the sign-in page.
If I was on a PC or Mac, same thing. If you were at home, I can't see that it would make any difference. The only scenario I can think of off the top of my head where one might truly need to have that tab open is if you were at work, using a work computer to browse the internet and purchase while at work.
Is the situation inconvenient and annoying? Yes. Are there simple work-arounds? Yes. Might you have to open and/or close a page a few extra times in a visit to the site? Yes.
Do I think this site is well secured? I'm not sure, but in general I would tend to doubt it. But more because the entire site is a c*ck-up, as our British friends would say, than just the current glitch.

I recall a thread named "What is your Mother's first name", is that the one you are thinking of? I can't imagine anyone answering the maiden name question.
I just did a search and found the first name question, but not the maiden name question. I sure could be wrong though.
I don't see anything wrong with saying the first name unless it is terribly unusual. My mom's name is Janet.

Here is where you first question the issue. If you read what @chickenbutt said above you will see that she never said there was a thread asking for the maiden name, but she did say she was waiting for one like that.
@Noel7 You are totally right. Sorry I misunderstood.

@silentgirl, if you're around long enough, and read in different areas but especially Community Chat enough, you'll see the phenomenon. It takes a while ;-)

@esmeraldagooch wrote:If you have a ip address or a business name it's easy to find a physical address.
So you are saying I go on a site, they can know exactly where I live with my IP? I am not talking just location. (I know that) I went on a site and this company called my phone. Where is this home address/IP phonebooK? Is there a special program?
@missy1, no, I don't believe an ordinary citizen can determine your home address from your IP address. Mine doesn't show the correct city even. Maybe @dooBdoo will chime in.
Interesting. I just checked my IP address. In the past it just gave a general location. This time it lists a very close proximity to where I live, what kind of device I'm using, my operating system, my screen size and my browser! The only thing not listed is my shoe size! Times, they are a changing. (thud)
I just looked mine up and it's way off. It's in the US, that's about the only thing that was right.
Your IP address is not YOUR IP address. IT is provided by the carrier you are using at the time. If you are in Starbucks, your IP address will not be the same one you use from home or at work. An IP address is not assigned to you and it temporary. Everytime you turn your device off, you get a new IP address when you turn it back on from your home or anywhere else.
You can turn off location services generated by your phone and tablets. That way no one will know your location. Delete your cookies everyday and your browsing history . Your device gives out much more information than your mother's first name.
Thank you. I wanted to mention that because @sidsmom made the comment about another board and the moderator having the IP address of those members and therefore being able to identify them. I just wanted to point out my IP address isn't close to being where I really am.
Forum admins can block members of a forum by IP address, can't they? That is what I've heard anyway. But how can they do that if your home IP address is different every time you sign on?
The search you referred to performing on your previous post was information brought up about your ISP not your IP-
Your IP is gained through your ISP (internet service provider) that's why you did not see it-
Yes, a site can ban you by your IP-If it is static, it is unchanging and always the same IP-If it is dynamic, it changes, but only within a certain range-It often returns to the same IP as well-In other words, it may or may not be the same IP-
If someone is difficult, a site may just ban an entire range of IPs that your IP falls into through your ISP without causing issues for others.

@Moonchilde Oh trust me, that was a genuine belly laugh- I have experienced and witnessed it personally, since day one! ![]()
There should be a "hobby time" section.
This has been a pretty great thread. It's nice to have the OP actually participate and acknowledge the time of all posters-

@silentgirl, There are about 65 responses I haven't seen since my last visit here, but I had to laugh at this! What really tickles me is when someone is offended by people who are offended! Usually the hackneyed, tiresome "PC" or "politically correct" reference is thrown into the mix, and then we're off... being offended by the offended! 😉 I agree with @Moonchilde, I think we've lost all sense of proportion with some of these words and as a result their meaning has been obfuscated.
