Re: Poison Canteloupe?

@SaveTheTurtles

I'm afraid to think how, but one can only speculate that the ground they were grown in was fertilized by animal manure...

Or human ?

It is really sickening, isn't it?

@LTT1.  The cantaloupe were not poisoned but were contaminated by Samonella bacteria.   This has become somewhat common with several significant incidents in recent years.

U.S. food safety officials are urging consumers not to eat recalled cantaloupe products due to the risk of illness as they investigate an outbreak of salmonella infections.

The number of reported infections has more than doubled in the week since the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the outbreak.

At least 99 people in 32 states have gotten sick from the bacteria, the CDC said in an update on Friday. At least 45 of them have been hospitalized. The most recent sickness onset was reported on Nov. 10, according to the FDA

Re: Contaminated Cantaloupe?

It could be from a human source, but often produce is grown in areas subject to water runoff where cattle and other livestock live. The soil becomes contaminated.

@bikerbabe. There was a bad outbreak in Southern Colorado several years ago with at least a dozen deaths, as I recall.  After a long investigation,  it was determined that the source of the Samonella was in the processing plant.

Water runoff from cattle sources (fecal matter) produces E. COLI bacteria.

Re: Contaminated Cantaloupe?

@LTT1   Not the first time this has been noted in the news. They talked about this at least a month ago and now the fruits are still being sold and still causing illnesses.

There's also a recall of peaches, nectarines and plums I believe.
