When it comes to produce, the best quality around here is found in family-owned, seasonally-operated stands. Usually picked that morning and grown with minimal pesticides.

tansy,

We probably do have Costco stores but have never shopped in one. We have a Sam's Club business membership but I never go there either.

Re: Consumer Reports Ranks Wegmans #1...

When I go back east at the end of the summer the one place I want to visit is a Wegman's. I will come home and probably be depressed for months at our lack of having one locally.

A Haggen's has opened about 15 minutes away and I eventually want to make a trip. It took over an Albertson's, deals exclusively with a specific ranch for beef and specific produce suppliers. Right down from them WalMart opened a stand alone grocery store. I want to take a peek there too. It's in what would be called an upscale area and it will be interesting to see what lines they carry. I can find items at the Super WalMart that no one else carries due to their selling volume.

Listen to me, wondering when I'll make a 15 minute trip to a grocery store! Me, who regularly made a 60 mile round trip to shop at the only chain grocery store available. It was a 120 mile round trip to shop at Costco and WalMart. I did those trips without thinking twice about the drive, it was just part of the routine of living in the middle of nowhere.

I watched a special on some cable channel over a year ago that included a tour of a Wegman's. My son went to one near where he lives and was reluctant to leave. The kid who was bored with grocery shopping as a youngster had a field day there. Now it's Momma's turn..... And I'll probably start a campaign to get them into California.

Re: Consumer Reports Ranks Wegmans #1...

OK, the angels have sung the praises of Wegmans for years. The Wegman's closest to us is over 50 miles away but we were in the area that day so we tried it.

It was nice, but it is a massive space. Time-consuming to get through. Expensive, the standard grocery items were too pricey. The fish was ridiculously overpriced and the prepared foods way, way too high in sodium. Smoked salmon that should be priced around $5.99 was easily doubled.

We walked out with a Rotisserie chicken, and a few bagels and bread.

Oh, and 8 bottles of wine because the BEST deal actually was the wines! And you get little recyclable wine bags! That was a nice touch and the check-out clerk carded me ! (not so special it seems - that's their policy)

The Rotisserie chicken was fine, no bells no whistles, same as other stores, at $4.00 maybe a buck less.

We have Wegman's imitator nearby, they used be called Broken Checkbook.,

Haggen's are a pretty good store...better than Albertson's and Safeway. There's a new one on the way over to my son's so I'll be checking it out soon.

Just a plain ole' simple girl, living and shopping in the Ozarks.

Have never seen a Wegman's, Publix or Trader Joes.

Shop weekly at our in town locally owned grocery, our clean, well-stocked Super WalMart (which is, of course a department store as well as a grocery store), and our clean, well-stocked Aldi's.

Of course, I may very well be feeding my loved ones poor quality meat and produce, but they are simple country folk as well so they are probably too uninformed about the big fancy grocery stores to know the difference {#emotions_dlg.sneaky}

I serve my husband and anyone who eats here poor quality meat and produce too.

I'll go out on a limb and say probably a good part of America shops in local or chain regular old grocery stores. I bet some posters here do too.

Running between these top rated stores would leave little time to post here.

Your two posts ladies, just really made me LOL! {#emotions_dlg.lol}

I live in a rural area, and we have chain grocery stores that are regional to our area and to WI. We do have Aldi's here and Save-A-Lot, too. We don't have a Whole Foods in our vicinity, or a Trader Joe's that is close to us. To get to either Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, we would have to drive about an hour or so in one direction or another.

Wegmans is considered a local and also a chain grocery store. They just happen to be outstanding in the way they treat their employees and customers and have excellent quality food.

I don't know how they can be considered local with only 85 outlets through out the country. Again, it's a great place, but it isn't everywhere or price friendly imo. My mother shops there but when she needs to stock up, she goes to the local Giant.

Aren't all places you shop at in your area considered local? They don't have them where I live now but when I lived in Buffalo I shopped at both Tops and Wegmans. They were right across the street from each other. I was a single mom on an extremely tight budget and I got great deals there. Lots of buy one get one free offers. I went through the ads every week and make up my menu from the ads and then hit each store. I never went shopping without first consulting the ads and then making a menu by what was on sale or special. Now I haven't lived there for about 10 yrs so I don't know if that has changed but I found when I shopped there that they were pretty close to Tops in terms of prices. There was a Walmart but it was across town and I honestly don't think they had a grocery store at that one. I can't remember but I didn't go in there to shop at the non grocery part either. They were certainly much less expensive than Fresh Market, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. I know there is a great demand for Wegmans down here as there is a large population of people from NYC and western NY. If they opened on down here they would kill it. The national chains we have here are Kroger and Food Lion, which IMO are both not good at all. We do have Harris Teeter and that is closer to my house but I just prefer Fresh Market and Whole Foods.

I hear all the time from people who have experienced Wegmans that they would love to have them where they live and think they would do well. I honestly don't know why their not all over the country.

Re: Consumer Reports Ranks Wegmans #1...

I read that. They always place at the top!

We have NONE of those top 3 anywhere near here. People have been trying to get a Wegmans for years. (I heard it goes by county income?).

I get SO jealous when my brother talks about Wegmans and how wonderful it is. We shop at Giant which I love, but I wish we had a Wegmans!

Re: Consumer Reports Ranks Wegmans #1...

Interesting thread.....not sure why some take it like some kind of personal offense.......some of our choices are personal preference or convenience or maybe the chain stores are better in some places than others.
