I'm in Ohio. No Wegmans here, no Publix.

Right in my area my choices are Super Walmart, Giant Eagle, Save-A-Lot and Aldi. Trader Joe's is about 35 minutes away.

Giant Eagle's prices have gotten ridiculous but I much prefer them over my other choices. I gave up on Walmart because I hated the produce and wouldn't buy meat from there. I have no desire or time to run to various stores. I want my shopping done in one trip.

There is a Heinens about 20 minutes from me and I've thought about going there this weekend and seeing how the prices are there and what the store is like. Anyone shop Heinens? I never see them mentioned.

Ms Diva, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN???? There was a thread about you last week.

I hope you are OK!Smile

Hi lulu! I had surgery in the beginning of March and then had some subsequent problems. It's such a hassle to get our laptop going anymore and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get to the boards from my phone. I used to be able to but then there was an upgrade and I can't figure it out.

Thank you! Smile

ETA: I had tickets to the ND/Kentucky game in Cleveland but couldn't go because of my issues. {#emotions_dlg.angry}

Heinens is even more expensive that Giant Eagle, at least from my experience. I am sure there are a good number of small or local chains that do a much better job that never get considered.

Most of my shopping is done at Walmart, Giant Eagle and occasionally Trader Joes. Produce this time of year is bad at all three places. During the summer both Walmart and Giant Eagle buy from local producers and the quality greatly improves.

Ratings may be a good starting point, but they are based on a sample of stores at a specific period of time. Looking at cleanliness during a snow storm or rating produce freshness in the dead of winter may not give consumers a true picture.

Personally, I find Heinens and Giant Eagle to be pretty similar in terms of prices (both higher than Walmart/Aldi), at least in my area. But the quality of meat and produce at Heinens is so much better. Heinens does carry a lot of higher-priced items and brands as well, but their store brand is very good, and it's rare if I'm looking for a specialty item that Heinens doesn't have it. I do the bulk of my shopping at Heinens, but the stores are close enough together that typically what I end up doing is making 2 stops a couple times a month when I need things that are significantly cheaper at Walmart (usually this is the "processed" stuff...cereal, steel cut oats, k-cups, that sort of thing). I only go to Giant Eagle when I need to stop at the state liquor store or I'm utilizing their dry cleaning service.

LipstickDiva, if you do visit Heinens, I will be curious to hear your thoughts Smile

But I also used to live in WNY and much preferred Tops to Wegmans, so my opinion is probably suspect {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I would agree that Wegmans doesn't have to be expensive. I moved and no longer am anywhere near a Wegmans. I always went to Wegmans.

Wegmans has great store brands - and their value packs of chicken and pork chops are very reasonable.

The expense comes from buying their yummy, prepared foods - hitting the Chinese/Thai/Indian buffet, the weekend brunch bar, we even had a special Polish buffet for Dyngus Day, complete with a polka band!

Their cakes and cheesecakes (especially the Greek yogurt with fruit) are fantastic, but expensive too.

No Wegman's here. Just Stop & Shop, ShopRite, and the Big Y. They all have their sales, nice prepared foods, and very good bakeries. I choose where I do my weekly grocery shopping by who has the best bargains in their weekly circular.

When we lived in FL, we always shopped at Publix. The experience was very good. I wish a couple of the Publix executives would split off and come up here to NH. The choices we have range between terrible and awful. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}
