Kind of makes sense to me. Same with Whole Foods, they are going to put their business in areas where it is the most profitable. They have been consistently rated either the top or in the top 3 for years now, and it isn't just on list of best businesses, it tops all the lists. It not only includes being a customer favorite but they are also really great employers, the pay is good and they offer lots of scholarship programs.

I would love to see a Publix come to our town. I have been to a couple in different cities and they are also ranked pretty high consistently. I always here raves on here about it too. Do you have a Publix around you, what are the supermarkets around where you live?

There are Wegmans in the heart of the cities of Rochester and Buffalo...their prime markets.

Their expansion into MA, NJ, VA, PA have been in well off suburbs only, but they only have a handful of stores outside of upstate NY.

The Wegmans not only treat their employees very well, they also are extremely generous within the communities they serve. When Bob Wegman (Danny's father) passed away, the funeral was standing room only, with the Catholic Mass broadcast on television and available on-demand.

It was a tribute to his role as a community leader noted for his generosity. He was truly beloved by all - rich and poor alike. His children and grandchildren have continued to honor his legacy. Wegmans is a privately owned company - so much of their good works are "under the radar" - they don't have to answer to stockholders or make decisions based on finances alone.

The following SuperMarkets that follow the same model as Wegmans' are

Super Walmart

Stop n Shop

Hannafords

Price Chopper

Market Basket

The heads of these stores also contribute to the community so I guess placing one store 'above' all others doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Years ago, the profit margin for grocery stores was around 2-4%. I'd have to look and see if this has changed. It was a pretty thin margin. I don't know IF stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, Fresh Market and Earth Fare are similar to Winn-Dixie, Kroger, Safeway, Publix, and other chain grocery stores edited to add when it comes to profit margins.

That said even the Walton Family contributes huge sums of money nationally and their stores locally. Unless they took to driving dump trucks full of money in communities across America and letting it fly out into the streets for people . . . some would still hate them for being "rich".

Following the same model doesn't mean they have the same quality. Trader Joes and Wegmans give out scholarships to the people who work for them.

In SF, every single day M-F, Trader Joes prepares lunches for all the kids at a large public school where most are very poor. They do a lot more, also.

TJoes and Costco provide health care for their employees. Walmart cannot say that.

Walmart got a low rating because of the quality of their food. I have a friend who lives in the CA mountains. One tiny store in her area, and down the road, a Walmart. She does not like Walmart, but shops there out of necessity. We stay with her often, I have been to Walmart with her. The quality of the fresh food there is poor, comparatively.

I'm not gonna continue the Walmart bash here, as for the other stores, they too treat their employees very well, scholarships and grants are not a new thing.
