@Plaidpants --- I think she meant well and said it out of sympathy for you, since she probably thought you were buying the medicine for yourself and assumed you were sick, rather than tired. I wouldn't take it to heart; I think you handled it very well.

It has been my experience in life that usually you can tell by a persons demeanor or eyes if they were meaning something in a rude way or were actually being empathetic or even just trying to start a conversation with you.

I understand how people could see it as rude.  Personally, I would not have said it. If she seemed kind in spirit, I would chalk it up to a lack of knowledge about what is proper and what is not, lonliness, or a half dozen other things.  Like others here have said....her intentions were probably not to do you harm.  A lot of things in life are not what they appear to be.
