No, I don't think she was rude at all.  I get the feeling she was an elderly woman who mothers everyone she sees and meant no disrespect.  Personally I wouldn't have given it a second thought and would have just let it go.

Recently I saw a young woman in the store who looked upset and I asked in a nice way, "Are you alright?" and she said she had just come from the doctor and was told she needs back surgery.  Since I had three back surgeries we talked for a few minutes, I wished her well and we went on our separate ways.

Not rude.  Perhaps not the best thing to say though.  If she was older, she was probably just trying to acknowledge you. Don't be upset.  You cannot control other people but you can control how you react.  I think you handled it well.  Let it go.

You didn't say how old the woman was, that might make some sense of why she would comment on a total strangers health. I find older people often don't realize that what they are thinking is coming out of their mouth.I have an elderly aunt who does that all the time and if you call her on it she says she doesn't mean anything by it.

@dex  Maybe I'm dense, but what is a "short bus?" I don't understand this entire post. This person admitted she was deliberately trying to insult you by asking if you took this short bus?

The "short bus" are the smaller school buses used to transport the developmentally disabled and handicapped to school. Basically the person was calling her the "r" word, what is now more politically correctly termed developmentally disabled.

Aww plaid pants! I guess i am the lone wolf here, but here is my thought. Yes it wasn't the kindest thong to say, especially to a stranger. But i bet she is one of those people with no filter to what comes out of her mouth. My Mom is like that. Some how they feell entitled to their comments or they just feel people appreciate what they have to say I wouldn't take it to heart. She had no right to offer her "opinion" and thank God more people are kinder and more thoughtful
