Colored Pearls Question

After seeing today's TSV, I had a question that I'm hoping someone can answer for me.

How do they get the different colors in the pearls? In other words, what makes them blue, green, etc?

Was Yuban, then changed to Plaid Pants due to forum upgrade, and apparently, I'm back to being Yuban.
