A piece of advice: Don't assume floors and things have been cleaned before semester begins. We were surprised when we moved into dorm before summer semester how dirty tile floors were when we swiffered. We were told had to wait to move in so that dorm rooms could be cleaned. I shutter to think of carpeted rooms. Happy move in!
Memories. My DD always moved back to school 3 weeks prior along with her field hockey team. For pre-season. They shared a Team suite and since the college had other functions over the summer the suites were used and so yep they needed cleaning. Then when she moved to her dorm room that needed to be cleaned as well. Including their shower stalls.

My niece had an experience like that. We were all surprised to find out that her college did not clean the rooms before the summer semester. I had a cleaning lady who drove up the next day and cleaned the room, my niece turned around and drove home for the night. Fortunately, her school was only an hour from home.

It was understood that as we moved in each one of the kids to their dorms to wipe down, sweep and anything else before placing the kid's belongings in their dorms.
Most of the time is was just dusting and cleaning the floors, the bathrooms were all good because the cleaning staff had that taken care of.

Tomorrow my husband and I are taking our two boys to college. One is in a newer dorm and the other about 50 years old. I am going with cleaning supplies in hand. The rest is up to them![]()

I remember those days with a relative who went to Ohio State. His first year his dorm was move in ready. The second year he moved into a different dorm and OMG. We went to move him in, took one look at the place and got back in our cars and headed to the nearest store to buy buckets, bleach, rags and various other cleaning supplies. We spent several hours sanitizing everything with bleach and scrubbing and cleaning. When his roommates showed up they couldn't believe how clean the place was and just kept commenting about how clean it smelled too. They wanted to know how often we were coming back. ![]()

So much fun! When DD started we knew the freshman dorm was the oldest on campus. We went down for summer orientation and saw the room. We also met her roommate's parents, who although they don't live anywhere near us, are still good friends! The "furniture" in the room was horrible. DH and her father scrounged around and found some in decent condition (hey - it gave them something to do!). Of course by the time school started and move-in day was here, the furniture was all different. But we made the best of it. The floors WERE filthy, just like you @Twins Mom experienced. We cleaned them and bought a rug.
We were staying at the same hotel. Roommates mom and I were heading out early the next morning to pick up a few things at Walmart and Target. The guys headed to Home Depot. We got a phone call in the car - the girls had both started their hairdryers at the same time and blew the power for the whole dorm. They were both so upset! ![]()
Congratulations to all of you who are experiencing this for the first time! DS is still in college, but he goes to a large university on the other side of the country. We don't really know a lot of what goes on, which might be better for us! ![]()
