I agree.  I'm about 15 pounds heavier than I was in high school, and wear a smaller size now.

It used to be hard to find anything smaller than size 6 in many stores.  I think a 6 in the past is a 4 today.   4 is 2.   Don't know about 0....can't wear that, but maybe my daughter can!

So true !!!   I kept a coupe of dresses that I loved from the late 60's and my daughter who is a size 6 couldn't get into them, they were way to small for her, they are a size 12 !!!

Size l0-12 was once the perfect size to be. Now it's XXS or that great size of 000.

Re: Clothing Sizes Change Over the Years

All I know is this:

I consider myself generally to be a size Medium, numeric size 8, except in pants I can sometimes be a Small.

I can wear anywhere from an XS to a L, depending the the retailer.

In numeric sizing, I can be anywhere from a 6 to a 10.

At QVC, I usually have to downsize, except for Isaac Mizrahi, which is my normal size M.

Lands End and LL Bean are more consistent for me.  A M in tops and a S in pants, although coats can be either S or M.  Same with Macys and Talbots.

Sometimes I have to order two sizes to check which one fits better.

When I'm in a brick or mortar, I take in several sizes of the same item.

And you can't assume that two of the same item will fit you the same way.  Many times I've tried a shirt on in one color, picked out another color, and it fits differently.

@febe1, but I think that @Silver Fox1's point is one that I find to be true, and that is that the 10-12 size that you say was the perfect size to be (say, many decades ago) would now be the equivalent of maybe half that number in many cases.

Or is that what you meant as well? Sometimes I am easily confused. :-)

Hi, @suzyQ3. No wonder you're confused! I'm confused myself. I believe I was bringing two thoughts together: figures have changed over the years and also, clothing sizes have changed over the years.

I probably should have made this statement stand alone instead of hanging onto silver fox's.

Sorry to confuse, @suzyQ3. Best wishes to you for the new year!
