Since you regard yourself as an atheist, I fail to see how that qualifies you to  "know more than a religious person". I am a faithful church attender and there is no requirement to "pay the piper".

I never did shake hands at the sigh of peace.  I just nod my head and smile.  Honestly I really never did like that practice, to me it's an interuption of the mass, you can always great other parishioners before or after mass.

Our churches here in Indiana are closed.  Some of them are meeting in cars and the pastor speaks over the microphone.

I personally find it easy to worship at home either on tv or my computer.  I listen to different pastors....then go to youtube for worship music.  Most people here just send their money to support their churchs through the mail or by computer.

I am a Christian but am rather non-denominational so I have a lot to choose from online. If you understand what communion is all about, I don't think it would be hard to give it to yourself at home.  I've never done that but I see nothing wrong with it.  We need to learn to "bend a little" in situations like this for the sake of all. God understands.

Yes, despite outrageous state edicts (already being contested in court) outlining "acceptable" means of dispensing sacraments, things WILL get back to normal.

I am not yet ready to go back to my church for services.  I don’t feel it is necessary to shake hands with anyone any more.  A nod of the head is fine with me.  As far as collections are concerned, one can always mail checks to the church, even if it is only one month at a time.

What I can see happening is one will drop their tithing in to a box, if they do chose to make a tithing.

Right before this virus thing started, our church changed how we did communion. The cups and the crackers were put on a table next to the side of the sanctuary; you just went and picked up a cup and one of the crackers, which were lined up on platters so you didn’t touch anything but one cracker, and you took it back to your seat and they asked us to partake as we wished. I am not fond of doing it that way, but now it makes more sense. I have never been fond of sipping out of the same cup as a lot of others. We are all seeing our services streamed online....but it just isn’t the same as being there. They will have to really think this through before we are all back together. Almost everyone gives their tithe online, but there is an offering bag at the door where you can place your gift. Am sure some donations have declined, but not much.

@Cats3000, I think it makes for a good discussion. She is just asking what we think. I think a lot of churchgoers are wondering the same thing. Chances are, our pastors don't yet know. Everyone is still trying to figure things out.

I tithe because I WANT to, but I don't talk about it to others in the church. I have no idea what others give either. But churches do need money to run on. They have bills to pay too. And nobody stops me at the door to pay my way through. Everyone is welcome and nobody is turned away.

@jubilant, it's funny you mention this because our church has us prepare our own communion to have at home during this time. They have music and tell us we can sing along if we want (which makes me laugh as I picture my son and I singing at the top of our lungs in the living room as we watch) and then they have the message, and at some point they pause do to a prayer, letting us know to have our communion ready. These are just symbols anyway so there is no harm in preparing our own. I agree, as do my church leaders, that God understands. They are doing all they can to make it as normal as possible and I have appreciated that.

Btw, my church is in Indiana. I don't live there, but very close to the state line.
