Hi, Miss Pammie, I think the price was 49 cents: at my dime store, they were sold near the 12" silk scarfs (13 cents) in the "Notions" dept.
They did brighten up many a cloth coat during the season. My mother would entrust me with this crucial pre-holiday purchase b/c she knew I loved those glittery things.

My sister and I would get the $.39 corsages but my mother had the deluxe $.59 one. We wore them on our Sunday coats during advent. it was such fun picking them out at Woolworth's.

My ""parents"" had the tradition of getting sh*t faced. This is a tradition neither myself or my sister continued. Had the most wretched holidays until we left home.

My oldest child's grandmother taught me to make tamales. her's were fabulous.
My masa has never been as moist and fluffy as hers and I keep thinking that I am forgetting something.
This is Mom's recipe
Ingredients
Water that the meat was prepared in (do not throw away)
blender where you mixed the chili sauce earlier for meat (do not rinse it)
Masa
Lard
salt
Mix all ingredients
4 or 6 lbs of Masa
3 lbs of Lard (has to be lard)
2 handfuls of salt or one large cooking spoon
add 1 cup of the boiled water and a handful of masa to the blender and and add it to the masa mixture
gradually add water to masa mixture until right consistency, dough must be firm but easy to spread on the husk
Oh yum. That's what I was going to post!! Instead of the traditional roast, ham or turkey (again) My daughter and I make different Mexican dishes. I grew up in south Texas, and My daughter lived with a Mexican family in Cuernavaca.. WE're as white as snow but our hearts and tummies are in Mexico
